EFFICIENCY OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHATE FERTILIZATION ON PEARL MILLET CULTIVARS ABSTRACTIn this study we aimed at evaluating the dry matter production (DMP), nitrogen content (NC) in plant tissues, above ground nitrogen conversion efficiency (ANCE) and above ground nitrogen recovery (ANR) by pearl millet cultivars submitted to different sources of phosphorus and nitrogen doses. The experiment was carried out in 2008 and a completely randomized block design was used in a 2 × 3 × 4 factorial arrangement with four replications. Treatments consisted of three pearl millet cultivars (ADR-7010; ADR-500 and BRS-1501), two sources of phosphorus (simple phosphate and thermo phosphate) at one dose (70 kg.ha -1) and four nitrogen (urea) doses (0; 40; 80 and 160 kg.ha -1 ). Statistical analysis revealed no significant interactions among variables. ADR-7010 presented (P<0.05) best dry matter production (1175.9 kg.ha -1 ) amongst cultivars; and simple phosphate showed better result than thermo phosphate. Increasing nitrogen doses led to increased production; harvest succession reduced DMP. There was difference (P<0.05) in NC. Linear NC increase was observed in function of N doses, with maximum value being 42.7 kg of extracted N. The ANCE and ANR decreased with nutrient input, maximum values being 10.7 kg.ha -1 and 33.4%,
Thirty-six experimental silos arranged in a completely randomized 4 x 3 factorial design were provided to evaluate the chemical changes of sunflower silage treated with soybean hulls, sunflower crushed and urea at 14, 21 and 28 days of ensilage. The additives were based on 5% natural matter, whereas control consisted of silage with 100% sunflower plant. OM, NDIP, and MM had average rates 911.2; 86.6 and 92.9 g kg-1 of dry matter respectively. The addition of soybean hulls and sunflower crushed increased DM rates after 28 and 21 days. Urea increased nitrogen fractions and the addition of soybean hulls increased total carbohydrate content of silage by 5.1%, whereas the addition of sunflower crushed decreased the same by 2.18%. NDF, ADF and hemicellulose average rates were 625.4, 460.3 and 165.2 g kg-1 of DM. The addition of soybean hulls and sunflower crushed reduced the in vitro dry matter digestibility by 8.3 and 5.97%. The addition of 5% sunflower crushed and soybean hulls improved the nutritional value of sunflower silage and the addition of urea improved the protein rates.
Hoof care, lesion curettage, and application of 5 % Stryphnodendron adstringens bark extract (S. adstringens (Mart.) Coville) or 3 % copper sulfate on surgical wounds of cattle were carried out in this research. A total of 180 cattle with digital dermatitis were used. They were distributed into six groups of 30 animals each (GI, GII, GIII, GIV, GV, and GVI). In GI and GII, only the sick digit was trimmed; in GIII and GIV, both sick and healthy digits of the lesioned limb were trimmed; and in GV and GVI, all digits were trimmed. During the postoperative period, 5 % S. adstringens extract was applied in GI, GIII, and GV, and 3 % copper sulfate solution was applied in GII, GIV, and GVI. After 60 days of evaluation, the data were analyzed using the Chi-squared test (p ≤ 0.05). Both therapeutic protocols utilizing surgical curettage of the lesions were efficient for treating digital dermatitis. However, when the procedure is followed by the trimming of sick and healthy digits, the healing is optimized and a greater number of animals are rehabilitated.
