PROBLEMMany psychologists have noted the potential value of music as a stimulus for projective tests. This value reaides in the fact that music is naturally non-representational, that it has an immediate connection with emotional experience, that unconscious needs gain satisfaction through this medium, and that its lack of verbal content makes possible the probing of emotional needs without distortion by defense mechanisms.The IPAT Music Preference Test of Personality(*) represents one of the few attempts to use music as the stimulus for a projective technique.
