This article provides an account of the role of two Assistant Educational Psychologists (Assistant EPs) who were employed by Educational Psychology and Specialist Support Service (EPSS) in a large shire county prior to commencing the Doctorate in Educational and Child psychology. It is written in response to a dearth of available literature regarding the role of the Assistant EP and highlights the potential benefits of the position to the Local Authority (LA) and in preparing candidates to meet the future demands of the EP service. It aims to provide a personal overview of experiences of working as an Assistant EP, the roles and responsibilities, training and support received, supervision and continuing professional development (CPD) and experience applying for the doctorate. It also explores the range of skills and experiences acquired and the importance of supervision in enhancing professional development. It is hoped that the article will be of interest for anyone considering becoming an EP.
