Background: This study investigated the association between presenteeism and the perceived availability of social support among hospital doctors in China. Methods: A questionnaire was administered by doctors randomly selected from 13 hospital in Hangzhou China using strati ed sampling. Logit model was used for data analysis. Results: The overall response rate was 88.16%. Among hospital doctors, for each unit increase of the perceived availability of social support, the prevalence of presenteeism was decreased by 8.3% (OR=0.91, P=0.000). In particular, if the doctors perceived availability of appraisal support, belonging support and tangible support as su cient, the act of presenteeism was reduced by 20.2% (OR=0.806, P=0.000) 20.4% (OR=0.803, P=0.000) and 21.0% (OR=0.799, P=0.000) respectively with statistical differences. Conclusion: In China, appraisal support, belonging support and tangible support, compared to other social support, had a stronger negative correlation with presenteeism among hospital doctors. The bene ts of social support in alleviating doctors' presenteeism warrant further investigation.
The study of emotional labor and sickness presenteeism in the hotel industry is crucial due to the current context of economic uncertainty and to a climate of insecurity that forces employees to continue to show up for work even despite being sick. This research aimed to explore the effect of supervision distrust as an antecedent of surface acting on hotel service employees' emotional exhaustion levels. Sickness surface acting-the voluntary effort to suppress illness symptoms or to fake a healthy health status-was introduced as a new construct to explain the relation between a perception of supervision distrust and emotional exhaustion. A total of 166 employees from Portuguese hotels completed a five-day diary survey.From these, 58 reported working while ill. The results showed that surface acting mediated the relationship between emotional exhaustion and supervision distrust.Further analysis with a subsample of 58 employees who reported frequency of sickness presenteeism revealed that for sick employees, sickness surface acting mediated the relationship between supervision distrust perception and emotional exhaustion.These findings bring the sickness surface acting construct to the sickness presenteeism literature, and highlight the importance of creating policies to reduce and manage the negative consequences of supervision distrust -a factor capable of promoting attendance and sickness presenteeism behaviors. They also inform human resources managers of the negative impacts of "service with a smile" and sickness presenteeism in the hotel industry.
The COVID-19 pandemic poses critical challenges for the health care workers (HCWs) around the world due to the increasing demands imposed on health care systems. This study aims to investigate how risk concern impacts burnout via positive and negative affect. Further, the moderating role of risk exposure (low, medium, and high) in this parallel mediation model is examined. A sample of 257 Portuguese HCWs answered a questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was applied. Results showed that risk concern positively influences negative affect – but not positive affect – and, consequently, burnout. Contrary to our expectations, this indirect effect was not greater for individuals in the high-risk group (vs. low-risk group), which can be explained by individual and organizational factors' buffering role. These findings draw healthcare organizations' attention to the hazardous effects of risk concern on HCWs' well-being.
The present study is one of the first to investigate the effects of housework engagement on work productivity despite sickness presenteeism and to explore personality traits (i.e., conscientiousness) and gender differences among couples. Based on a sample of 180 heterosexual couples, an integrated model of both housework and workplace realities was proposed and tested based on the actor-partner interdependence model using structural equation modeling. The results verify that the higher the degree of women’s conscientiousness, the greater their and their partners’ level of productivity despite presenteeism. In addition, the higher the couple’s perception of partner support is, the greater their level of work productivity despite health problems, for both men and women. Results also confirm that housework engagement mediates the relationships between both conscientiousness and perceived partner support and work productivity despite health problems, for women, but not for men. This study denotes an advance in the literature on the relationships between personal and social resources within the family domain and work productivity despite sickness presenteeism. The findings support the applicability of the resource perspective of the Job Demands-Resources theory (JD-R) (i.e., motivational branch) to housework, as well as extend existing presenteeism models by providing evidence for the inclusion of the family domain in explaining this organizational phenomenon.
