Recently, there has been great interest in errorless learning as a new intervention technique. This may be because there are data from both basic neuroscience and clinical application that suggest it is superior to more traditional trial and error methods. In the contemporary literature the most prominent investigations of errorless learning are those designed for rehabilitation of memory impairments. These studies include numerous demonstrations of effective amelioration of word finding difficulties using errorless intervention. The aphasic literature contains no examples of purely errorless learning methods, however, some studies have successfully treated anomia using error reducing techniques. This suggests that errorless learning could be advantageous for treating aphasic disorders, in particular anomia. To explore this idea, we discuss previous research and review two current theories of errorless learning. We provide our own framework for thinking about errorless and errorful learning. In addition, a review of the anomia treatment literature (from 1985 to the present) is presented and conclusions drawn on the methods of treating the word finding difficulties of patients with aphasia.
Background: The calcium-activated chloride channel ANO1 is highly expressed in cancer.Results: Inhibition of ANO1 activity alone is not sufficient to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, suggesting a novel function of ANO1 protein in cancer.Conclusion: The ANO1 inhibitor CaCCinh-A01 inhibits cancer cell proliferation by facilitating degradation of ANO1.Significance: Our results may provide a new targeting approach for antitumor therapy in ANO1-amplified cancers.
a b s t r a c tSemantic aphasia (SA) refers to a subset of aphasic patients who exhibit multimodal semantic deficits (Jefferies, E., & Lambon Ralph, M. (2006). Semantic impairment in stroke aphasia vs semantic dementia: a case-series comparison. Brain, 129(8), 2132-2147). Consistent with their underlying semantic control deficit, SA picture naming accuracy can be improved considerably with a correct phonological cue. The performance of normal individuals in the tempo picture naming paradigm reveals an increased impact of both correct and incorrect phonological cueing, and it has been suggested that this technique reduces resources available for semantic control in neurologically-intact participants (Hodgson, C., & Lambon Ralph, M. (2008). Mimicking aphasic semantic naming errors in normal speech production: Evidence from a novel experimental paradigm. Brain and Language, 104(1), 89-101.). We tested this hypothesis by considering the impact of both correct and incorrect phonological cues on picture naming in a case series of SA patients, using exactly the same items as those presented to normal participants for tempo naming. The results confirmed the positive effect of correct cues and revealed for the first time the negative effects of category co-ordinate miscues amongst these patients in both overall accuracy and semantic error rates. The implications of our results for current speech production models are considered.
