Reduced levels of platelets are known to occur experimentally in association with low temperatures. but we believe this report of thrombocytopenia in accidental hypothermia in two elderly persons to be the first of its kind.
The importance of effective advance care planning is often underestimated by professionals caring for care home residents. Using a simulated scenario, this model aimed to highlight the importance of timely advance care planning for care home residents. An adapted simulation effectiveness tool was used to evaluate a simulated scenario of a resident with advanced dementia. Feedback from this tool, N = 28 (response rate 82%), suggests this model was well received and that simulation training delivered by a multi-professional faculty, effectively demonstrates the benefits of early advance care planning for residents with dementia.
When the UK government declared a national lockdown on 23 March 2020, staff at Elliott Hall Medical Centre in Harrow recognised that many of their vulnerable patients would find it difficult to cope. To help them, the practice called on volunteers within its patient community to assist. Here they describe what they did and how they continue to work with patient volunteers in the next phase of the pandemic.
