Suicidal ideation during adolescence is quite common. Longitudinal ideation patterns may predict adolescents at greatest risk of progressing to more serious suicidal behaviors. We enumerated suicidal ideation trajectory subgroups and estimated subgroup association with later suicidal plans and attempts using data collected across a 13-year period from 552 Caucasian adolescents. Three subgroups were found: non-ideators (no ideation), decreasers (ideation decreased), and increasers (ideation persisted or increased). Probability of planning a suicide was greatest among increasers (females: .54, males: 51, p < .01). Probability of attempting suicide was greatest among male decreasers (.36, p < .01) and female increasers (.25, p < .01).
Over the past several decades couple and family therapists have been engaged in a dialogue about issues of diversity. Some scholars have argued that the CFT field has not fully addressed diversity issues when training student therapists. Our purpose in writing this paper is to clearly identify how a feminist-informed social justice training model fits within accreditation standards of COAMFTE. The components of the model (i.e., coursework, supervision, CFT faculty relationships, CFT community relationships, relationships with local communities, recruitment, and research) are common pieces of all training programs, but in this paper we suggest ways for transforming these aspects of training to be centered in feminism and social justice. The paper concludes with the presentation of the results from two qualitative evaluations that illustrates the benefits and challenges of the feminist-informed social justice training model.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a premarital educational program, with the secondary goal of determining if the structure (conjoint versus group) and the participants' gender influenced program effectiveness. Data were collected from 29 heterosexual couples. Couples were placed in one of three conditions:(1) premarital education in a group format, (2) premarital education as an individual couple, or (3) the comparison group (no premarital education). The goal of the 8-week intervention was to improve couples' readiness and preparation for marriage as measured by the PREP-M. The findings suggested that the educational program achieved its stated goal.
Self-help books, a pervasive and influential aspect of society, can have a beneficial or detrimental effect on the therapeutic process. This article describes a thematic analysis and feminist critique of the best-selling self-help book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. This analysis revealed that the author's materials are inconsistent with significant family therapy research findings and key principles of feminist theories. His descriptions of each gender and his recommendations for improving relationships serve to endorse and encourage power differentials between women and men.
