President Obamas foreign policy grand strategy can be described by the terms shadowboxing or shadowboxer. Shadowboxing is a technique that boxers use to practice, sparring with imaginary opponents or attacking shadows in preparation for the real fight. Similarly, President Obama attacks covert threats but rarely responds to visible or viable threats. Like a practicing boxer, President Obama is fighting the murky shadows while refusing to engage the main stage in the international arena. Obamas foreign policy grand strategy consists of the following five tenets. (1) Modest Retrenchment in
We examine regulations in thirteen Southern states regarding access to legal abortion, procedures for juveniles and minors seeking birth control or abortions, clinic regulations, and the dynamics of public funding of birth control and abortion. Southern state legislatures play an important strategic role in national anti-legal abortion politics. We analyze the paradox of the Southern population utilizing legal abortion and birth control at comparable levels to other regions of the country, while Southern legislatures consistently restrict access to these options. Our paper integrates gender, social class, race, and sexuality into our analysis of this aspect of Southern and national politics.
Conservative women's organizations such as IWF and CWA have often been ignored by both feminists and academic scholars. Feminists have mostly resented and ostracized these organizations for their antifeminist views, while academics have not seriously addressed them. Ronnee Schreiber's book is an invaluable contribution to both women and gender studies and political science.Throughout the book, Schreiber looks at how each organization tackles particular political issues. Although their characters differ, there are times when these two organizations agree with one another and even with the feminists. Chapter 3 looks at how both IWF and CWA have established and marketed themselves as conservative women's organizations. Like the feminist organizations they criticize, both IWF and CWA use their own gender identities to express the idea that they truly represent women. However, as Schreiber states, there is no such thing as a distinct women's perspective; every woman is different.Chapter 4 looks at how both IWF and CWA view domestic violence. The CWA believes that women are victims of male violence and a sadistic culture; CWA purports that pornography is a cause of violence against women. IWF also criticizes pornography and asserts that although domestic violence is a problem, it has been exaggerated by feminists. IWF wants to help women escape domestic violence by empowering women. Therefore, the organization disagrees with legislation such as the Violence against Women Act (VAWA) because it confiscates the decision-making power of abused women.
