Abstract Auto-hemotherapy consists of removing blood through venipuncture and immediate administration by intramuscular or subcutaneous route in the same individual. It is a low-cost technique that has been used for many years for a variety of diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the synovial tissue of many joints. The objective was to evaluate the effects of autohemotherapy in rheumatoid arthritis using 6 patients divided equally into a control and test group, who received the application of autohemotherapy every 7 days for 8 weeks. Both groups were evaluated by blood count, rheumatoid factor (RF), C-reactive protein (CRP) and clinical index of disease activity (CDAI). In addition, the patients in the test group were submitted to a questionnaire addressing questions about their experience with autohemotherapy. Through the results, it was not possible to observe any difference in the laboratory parameters between the control and test groups, however, upon the analysis of the questionnaire and the score of the clinical index of disease activity, an improvement was observed in patients undergoing treatment. The technique proved to be without harmful effects, however, there is a need for further studies to verify the effectiveness of auto-hemotherapy in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
