Poverty is one of the reasons underlying most of the diseases in the developing countries. Paediatricians by themselves cannot eliminate this evil. The infant is completely dependant on the mother for his/her nutrition and the feeding patterns adopted by her reflect the social customs, beliefs, traditions, cultural practices, superstitions and her intellectual level. It is in this sphere that the paediatrician has an important role to play by imparting proper health education. To impart health education, one must know the various traditional feeding and child rearing practices in a particular community or area. This study was taken to find out the feeding habits and various child rearing practices in Pondicherry in South India.
