Adnexal acantholysis does not reliably distinguish PV from PF. The level of acantholysis, degree of dyskeratosis, and acantholytic hypergranulosis are distinguishing features between the two types of pemphigus and other acantholytic disorders.
Lichen striatus (LS) is an asymptomatic, spontaneously resolving linear dermatosis consisting of 2 to 4 mm flat topped papules following the lines of Blaschko. Two siblings presented with a simultaneous occurrence of LS along the same Blaschko line of the left upper extremity. Only four other cases of a simultaneous occurrence of LS in related siblings have been reported, but none of these have occurred in the same extremity. Although 10 years have passed since the last case report of this unique concurrent familial eruption, few discoveries have been made regarding its etiology. Several theories have been proposed including environmental agents, cutaneous injury, viral infection, hypersensitivity, and genetic predisposition. These theories are discussed along with retrotransposons, a possible new explanation for the pathogenesis of this and other Blaschko line disorders.
Background: Epidermal nevus syndrome is a multi-system disease with a wide spectrum of clinical presentation. Numerous specialists may be required to address its extra cutaneous manifestations.Main observations: We report a severe case of epidermal nevus syndrome involving the oral cavity, pharynx, and central nervous system in addition to disfiguring skin lesions. Conclusions: Dermatologists are in a unique position to first render the diagnosis of epidermal nevus syndrome for young patients and ensure appropriate follow-up. Twenty-eight weanling pigs inoculated with sporocysts from an isolate of Sarcocystis suicanis from Georgia were examined at intervals ranging from 2 to 90 days postinoculation (DPI). Merogony was first observed histologically within the heart muscle 12 DPI and within 23 of 35 tissues examined 13 DPI. Most infected cells were "floating" in extravascular spaces and were near intact endothelial cells. In some cases, the infected cell clearly was an endothelial cell comprising a portion of the capillary wall. Immature sarcocysts containing metrocytes were observed in striated muscle 27 DPI, and bradyzoites were detected by digestion techniques 52 DPI. Sarcocysts matured between 27 and 80 DPI, after which thickness of the cyst wall and morphology of bradyzoites changed little. Dissolution of sarcocysts was detected as early as 38 DPI and was accompanied by ingress of plasma cells, lymphocytes, and occasionally, eosinophils. Based on information presented herein, feeder pigs reared on pasture may become infected, and infections mature well within the 100-day period usually considered necessary for production of marketable swine.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
