Periodic floods are important because of the role they play in maintaining natural geomorphic and ecological processes in rivers. However, fully understanding their role is hampered by the difficulty of undertaking controlled experimental studies in river channels during flood events. To solve this problem, we recently developed a small portable flume (Figure l).The flume increases hydraulic forces acting over a patch of river‐bed, thus mimicking conditions associated with floods. We have used it to conduct experiments to help resolve questions related to the interactions between instream hydraulics, sediment transport, and invertebrate drift during small, frequent floods [e.g., Gibbins et al.,2007].
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
