Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine the differences in the values and behaviours of employees and entrepreneurs and to develop guidelines for employers to foster entrepreneurial thinking in their organisations.
Design/methodology/approach
To determine individual behaviours, the authors used the career adaptability scale developed by Savickas and Porfelli (2012), complemented with the statements regarding relationships in the workplace and reward, designed by Gattiker and Larwood (1986). The individual values were evaluated by Schwartz’s individual value framework. The career success of individuals was defined by income level and job satisfaction. Data from a sample of 473 respondents were analysed using structural equation modelling.
Findings
This paper reveals that there are differences in the behaviours and the values of employees and entrepreneurs. Employees are more concerned with relationships at the workplace, rewards and confidence, whereas entrepreneurs focus solely on relationships. Self-direction value has a direct positive impact. Universalism, conformism, achievement, stimulation and safety have indirect positive effects on career success for employees. There is no specific individual value driving career success for entrepreneurs.
Originality/value
This paper follows the recent trends in organisational culture development whereby organisations seek to incorporate the entrepreneurial mindset at all levels of the organisation. Until now, there has been scarce empirical evidence on the differences between entrepreneurial and employee values. This research provides evidence that the value gap between these two distinct groups is considerable enough to question the ability of the average employee to adopt the entrepreneurial behaviour required by modern organisations.
The purpose of the study is to research the relative importance of various factors that motivate Latvian consumers to purchase products and services from social enterprises in order to provide practical suggestions and recommendations for Latvian social enterprises that would allow them to improve their performance. The primary method used by the study is quantitative research by the means of an online survey of Latvian consumers. The results of the research indicate that Latvian consumers find the product / service quality aspects, as well as aspects of social responsibility and convenience of the shopping location, on average, as most motivating to purchase products / services of social enterprises. However, the results of factor analysis highlight the importance of emotional aspects during on-site shopping as well as the importance of digital presence. Such factors as pleasant atmosphere and friendly service have the highest potential to generate repeat purchases among Latvian consumers. Communication of social value is important, but should not be the only focus of social enterprises.
This paper reflects findings from the evaluation of the conceptual model for corporate identity management in health care developed by Rutitis and Batraga (2013). First, expert surveying (n=8) was carried out to evaluate the understanding of the health care experts regarding assumptions included in the development of the conceptual model for corporate identity management in health care. During the second stage, health care sector company survey (n=52) was implemented to evaluate the expression of corporate identity dimensions outlined in model by Rutitis and Batraga within the health care enterprises in Latvia
Failure analysis and prevention are important to all of the engineering disciplines, especially for the aerospace industry. Aircraft accidents are remembered by the public because of the unusually high loss of life and broad extent of damage. In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN) technique for the data processing of on-line fatigue crack growth monitoring is proposed after analyzing the general technique for fatigue crack growth data. A model for predicting the fatigue crack growth by ANN is presented, which does not need all kinds of materials and environment parameters, and only needs to measure the relation between a (length of crack) and N (cyclic times of loading) in-service. The feasibility of this model was verified by some examples. It makes up the inadequacy of data processing for current technique and on-line monitoring. Hence it has definite realistic meaning for engineering application.
