This article reports on the investigation of the acoustic characteristics of the Afrikaans voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ 2 . As yet, a palatal [ʃ] for /s/ has been reported only in a limited case, namely where /s/ is followed by palatal /j/, for example in the phrase is jy ("are you"), pronounced as [ə-ʃəi]. This seems to be an instance of regressive coarticulation, resulting in coalescence of basic /s/ and /j/. The present study revealed that, especially in the pronunciation of young, white Afrikaans-speakers, /s/ is also palatalised progressively when preceded by /r/ in the coda cluster /rs/, and, to a lesser extent, also in other contexts where /r/ is involved, for example across syllable and word boundaries. Only a slight presence of palatalisation was detected in the production of /s/ in the speech of the white, older speakers of the present study. This finding might be indicative of a definite change in the Afrikaans consonant system. A post hoc reflection is offered here on the possible presence of /s/-fronting, especially in the speech of the younger females. Such pronunciation could very well be a prestige marker for affluent speakers of Afrikaans.
Language skills are essential for education and economic development. Many countries (especially in Africa) have more than one official language and even more unofficial languages. Being able to express oneself effectively in the written word is required for tertiary education. Unfortunately, cell phones are often blamed for the degradation of language skills. There have been many studies blaming cell phone usage and instant messaging as being responsible for the the lack of language skills of children, teenagers, and young adults. Hadeda is a facility where teachers and parents can create spelling lists for pupils and children using either a cell phone or an internet based workstation. Hadeda then generates a fun and enjoyable cell phone midlet (computer program) which pupils and children can download onto their personal cell phone. Hadeda pronounces the words with electronic voices and the pupils and children can then practice their spelling on a medium they enjoy.
High-quality articulatory speech synthesis has many potential applications in speech science and technology. However, developing appropriate mappings from linguistic specification to articulatory gestures is difficult and time consuming. In this paper we construct an optimisation-based framework as a first step towards learning these mappings without manual intervention. We demonstrate the production of syllables with complex onsets and discuss the quality of the articulatory gestures with reference to coarticulation.
Given an articulatory-to-acoustic forward model, it is a priori unknown how its motor control must be operated to achieve a desired acoustic result. This control problem is a fundamental issue of articulatory speech synthesis and the cradle of acousticto-articulatory inversion, a discipline which attempts to address the issue by the means of various methods. This work presents an end-to-end solution to the articulatory control problem, in which synthetic motor trajectories of Monte-Carlo-generated artificial speech are linked to input modalities (such as natural speech recordings or phoneme sequence input) via speakerindependent latent representations of a vector-quantized variational autoencoder. The proposed method is self-supervised and thus, in principle, synthesizer and speaker model independent.
