Cycling has achieved more and more significant meanings in the European contemporary society's life. It is promoted on a wider-and-wider social, cultural and sport level and it has influences which were unsuspected before. This study has revealed the behavioural profile of the urban cyclists in Romania, which is a European country with a big deficit of cycling specialized infrastructure. Having interviewed 235 men and 70 women, urban cyclists, during 2016-2018, has enabled us to carry out eight comparisons upon different criteria, at five different age categories. The results highlight the profile of the cycling practitioners, according to their gender and age, the differences between the groups being calculated by the chi square test. Among the results we notice aspects such as: men complete their sport activism especially with football, as compared to women who practise indoor fitness mainly; men cycle about two times more frequently, they spend approximately two times more time on their bike and they cover about three times bigger distances in comparison with women. Both gender groups generally invest 200-500 euro in this physical activity aimed at cultivating health, whereas the utilitarian purpose is almost inexistent. Both gender subjects admit that important benefits are burning excess calories and fighting stress. Basically, both gender categories prefer cycling with friends, even though a lot of men practise the activity individually as well, or in cycling communities, while women prefer cycling within their families.
The research identified and analysed four controversies linked to the Romanian performance sports, which present both positive and negative aspects that characterise the adaptation process of the contemporary Romanian society to the European community ideals. The decrease of Romania's Olympic performances cannot be attributed to participant sportsmen, but to the antiquated sports system in Romania, within which specialists carry a great responsibility. In Romania sport is a dynamic sector, with a rapid development and a more and more significant macroeconomic impact; within it, mass sports has a sure development while performance sports manifests a light drawback. Taking into consideration that Romania has never had developed mass sports, we can anticipate a revival of performance sports in the future. As far as present negative connotations of the Romanian sports system are concerned, the research analysed issues connected to the decrease of the number of performance sportsmen, the increase of doping cases, poor school training of performance sportsmen, the declining status of performance sportsman. In final, author suggested the reasonable solution for this bed aspects.
Romania outstood throughout time in the Olympic Games with valuable sportsmen, gaining respect and consideration; this way sport has become one of the most efficient ambassadors of our country abroad. Along with the change of the social system, following 1989, sports had also to adapt to the requirements of market economy, change which has materialised, among others, in decreases of value confirmed by great sportive competitions. This research brings into attention an indicator not promoted in specialty culture, that is the report between human resources categories (sportsmen versus specialists), shortened RSS. Without knowing and imposing an optimal value of RSS according to each sport, the research presents the RSS dynamics during the latest Olympic cycles, creating observational correlations between top results and RSS value for each sports federation and Olympic cycle. The accuses brought to the lack of financing in sports must be mitigated as long as the trainers are paid from public money for an activity they perform with too few sportsmen. Acknowledging and imposing an optimal value of RSS for each sports federation may contribute to making more efficient the trainers' activities, creating new premises for the mass basis of performance sport, highlighting sports that are attractive for children and young people and rendering objective the problems within the sports in crisis.
