Introduction: Breastfeeding in the first 2 hours after childbirth has the power to increase duration when compared to a wait of 4 hours or more. “The newborn has only three essential needs: the warmth of the mother's arms, the certainty of the mother's presence and the milk of her breasts. Breastfeeding satisfies all three needs. Objective: this production aimed to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding in the delivery room, right after birth, in the first hour of life, for child growth and development. Methodology: This study used the integrative literature review as a method, which allows readers to recognize the professionals who most investigate a given subject, to carry out scientific findings of opinions and ideas. For the search, the following descriptors were selected: breastfeeding, normal delivery and birth. Results and Discussion: The safest, most effective and complete way to achieve adequate growth and development of a child is to ensure breastfeeding from the first hour of extrauterine life.
