Temporal and spatial resolution requirements for extracting urban/suburban infrastructure and socio-economic attributes from remote sen.& data are presented. The goal is to relate the user information requirements with the current and proposed remote sensing systems to determine if there are substantive gaps in capability. Several remote sensing systems currently provide some of the desired urban/suburban infrastructure and socio-economic information when the required spatial resolution is poorer than 4 by 4 m and the temporal resolution is between 1 and 55 days (e.g., Landsat MSS and Thematic Mapper, SPOTI-4, Russian TK-350, RADARSAT, Indian IRS-ICD, NOAA AVHRR, GOES, Meteosat). Current high spatial resolution sensor systems such as the Russian SPIN-2 KVR-1000 (2-by 2-m panchromatic; when in orbit) and proposed sensor systems (EOSAT Space Imaging IKONOS 1-by 1-m panchromatic; Earth Watch Quickbird 0.82 by 0.82 m; Orbview-3 1 by I m) may provide additional capability. Large-scale metric aerial photography or digital camera imagery with spatial resolutions ranging from I 0.25 to 1 m will still be required to satisfy several important urban/suburban information requirements. Hartmann (1991) recently developed the Boundary Questionnaire (BQ) to measure the structure of mental boundaries in adults. To date however, the scale has not been used with an adolescent population. The present study assessed the validity of the BQ for adolescents by determining whether the scale would differentiate between adolescents in manners consistent with adult findings. As predicted, adolescents who demonstrated thinner boundaries on the BQ tended to be female, and reported significantly greater levels of dream recall, nightmare frequency and nightmare disturbance when compared with a control group of thick boundary adolescents, confirming the usage of the BQ as a valid personality measure. The findings are discussed within the framework of adolescent ego development.For several decades, theorists have used the concept of the ego boundary to describe the demarcation between a person and his or her internal and external environments. Considerable analog and digital remotely sensed imagery is in danger of being lost for future research if appropriate analog and digital methods of data archiving are not initiated. In addition, there should be some mechanism for accessing and viewing the archived information. This paper summarizes important issues that must be resolved when developing a remote sensing image browse and archival system, including: selection of the storage media having the greatest longevity and least cost, browse versus archive considerations, image scanning considerations, data compression logic, degree of image rectification required, and the design of the user interface including method of interaction (traditional versus hypertext) and methods of search (space-dominant, time-dominant and/or attribute-dominant). An operational hypermedia browse and archival system demonstrates how these considerations might be addressed.
