Wind is suspected to be a primary dispersal mechanism for large branchiopod cysts on the Colorado Plateau. We used a wind tunnel to investigate wind velocities capable of moving pothole sediment and cysts from intact and disturbed surfaces. Material moved in the wind tunnel was trapped in filters; cysts were separated from sediment and counted. Undisturbed sediment moved at velocities as low as 5.9 m s -1 (12.3 miles h -1 ). A single all-terrain vehicle (ATV) track increased the sediment mass collected 10-fold, with particles moving at a wind velocity of only 4.2 m s -1 (8.7 miles h -1 ). Cysts were recovered from every wind tunnel trial. Measured wind velocities are representative of lowwind speeds measured near Moab, Utah. Wind can move large numbers of cysts to and from potholes on the Colorado Plateau. Our results indicate that large branchiopod cysts move across pothole basins at lowwind speeds; additional work is needed to establish velocities at which cysts move between potholes.
In chronic renal disease, the progressive accumulation of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins in the mesangium results in fibrosis, glomerulosclerosis, and eventual renal failure. Mice deficient in proalpha2(I) collagen are not only a model of osteogenesis imperfecta but also accumulate fibrillar homotrimeric type I collagen in the mesangium. This accumulation spreads to the subendothelial space in the peripheral capillary loops. Picosirius red staining of kidney sections demonstrates that in comparison to wild-type mice, Col1a2-deficient homozygous and heterozygous mice exhibit abnormal glomerular collagen deposition in a gene dosage-dependent manner. The glomerulopathy initiates during the first postnatal week, appears progressive following the pattern of glomerular maturation and results in albuminuria in severely affected animals. In situ hybridization revealed no gross differences in steady-state proalpha1(I) and proalpha2(I) collagen mRNA levels among the three genotypes. Quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, however, using whole kidney sections showed a twofold increase in steady-state proalpha1(I) collagen mRNA in 1-month homozygous Col1a2-deficient animals compared with wild-type and heterozygous animals. We suggest that glomerular collagen deposition seen in the osteogenesis imperfecta model mice is, in part, owing to pretranslational mechanisms and may represent an over compensation of wound healing.
Abstract:Private voluntary standards such as the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO's) 14000 series have played an increasingly important role in encouraging corporations to adopt more sustainable business models on their own initiative and not in direct response to governmentally mandated requirements. ISO standards have a number of benefits, including promoting international uniformity; elevating environmental issues within an enterprise; promoting international trade; and providing a minimal level of environmental performance in countries with less than adequate regulatory infrastructure. Concerns about ISO standards include the relationship to public regulation; and ISO 14001's essentially procedural, as opposed to performance-based, character. International trade agreements such as NAFTA and the WTO Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade inject ISO standards into the public policy arena. Because of the structure of these agreements, ISO standards may operate either as a sword-a negative standard used to challenge a domestic regulatory action-or a shield-an internationally agreed reference point that bolsters the legitimacy of a national measure. This Essay examines the potential for ISO standards on eco-labeling to act as swords to attack domestic requirements, and those on life cycle analysis to serve as shields to insulate municipal actions from international challenge in areas such as climate protection.
