Studies on a patient with march haemoglobinuria suggest that in such subjects abnormal haemolysis takes place with ordinary physical activity. The resulting low haemoglobin binding capacity of the plasma allows haemoglobinuria to occur at a relatively low level of plasma haemoglobin. Some support is offered for the concept that the haemolysis occurs as the result of an extra‐erythrocytic defect.
