The levels of erythropoietiti and metabolic s t i n~u l a t i~~g factor\s) were assayed in the plasma of (logs a t I and 3 hours and a t 2, 3, 4, 6-7, and 8-0 days after the rapid production of anaemia by dextral-for-blood exchange. The assay results were considered in relation to the reticulocyte response and oxygen c.onsurnption of the anaemic dogs over this same period.An increase in erythropoietiii was ilrst detected a t 2 days and reached a maximum by 4 days after exchange. The level of erythro~~oietin was falling by 6-7 days and reached control levels by 8-0 days. A I~ increase in reticulocyte level in anaemic dogs did not occur until 3-4 days and was maximal a t 8-9 days. The ~netabolic stimulating activity of the plasmla t ended to parallel the changes in level of erythropoietin except a t 3 hours when there was a considerable incre,rse in metabolic activity although there was a rlormal level of erythropoietin. Proteinbound iodine in plasma was decreased followi~lg dextran-for-lAood exchange. The oxygen consumption of the anaemic dog was below control levels at I and :( hours, but subsequently above control levels at 4 to $1 days.The changes in erythropoietiil and ~lletabolir sti~nulatiilg factor were somewhat sinlilar to the change in level of a cardiot~nic agent previo~~sly fvrind in t h e blood of dogs during recovery from anaemia.
