Objectives: The knowledge of the normal morphology of the maxillary sinuses and their variations is important for maxillofacial radiologists to achieve a better evaluation and delineation of pathologies and for pre-implant evaluation of the maxilla. The aim of our study was to evaluate anatomical variations of maxillary sinuses using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: 150 CBCT images where bilateral maxillary sinuses were scanned were included in the study following the inclusion and exclusion criteria. 75 CBCT scans each of males and females were studied using the Planmeca Romexis software (Version 4.6.2). Multiplanar images were searched for the presence of anatomical variations such as septae, haller cells and ethmomaxillary sinus. The data were subjected to Chi square test using SPSS software to compare and relate gender and site based differences in the occurrence of the anatomical variations. Results: Sinus septa was the predominant variation in both males and females with significantly higher prevalence in females and on the right side. An ethmomaxillary sinus was seen significantly more often in males, while Haller cells did not show any gender based differences in their occurrence. Ethmomaxillary sinus and Haller cells showed no difference in occurrence on the right and left side. Conclusions: Anatomic variations of the maxillary sinuses are a common finding. It necessary for the clinicians to be familiar with these variations to avoid clinical complications especially in cases of implant placements.
Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of soft tissue calcifications in orofacial region and their panoramic radiographic characteristics using digital panoramic radiographs among patients reporting to a tertiary dental hospital. Methods: 1,578 digital panoramic radiographs were retrieved from the archives and scrutinized for the presence of calcifications. Soft tissue calcifications were recorded according to age, gender, site (left or right). Data were analysed using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact test using SPSS software and a p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Among the total number of radiographs, calcified carotid artery (34.3%), calcified stylohyoid ligament (21%), tonsillolith (10.3%), phlebolith (17.6%), antrolith (6.3%), sialolith (5.9%), rhinolith (2.5%) and calcified lymph nodes (1.9%) were identified. The most commonly observed calcifications were calcification of carotid artery and stylohyoid ligament and the least commonly observed calcifications were rhinolith and calcified lymph node. A statistically significant association of the presence of calcifications of carotid artery and stylohyoid ligament on the left and right side was observed in females and tonsillolith on the right side in males (p-value < 0.05). Considering the gender and age group, the occurrence of antrolith among males and rhinolith among females of young-adult population, tonsillolith among the males, calcified carotid artery and stylohyoid ligament among the females of middle-aged population was found to be significant. Conclusion: Soft tissue calcifications are often encountered in dental panoramic radiographs. Our study revealed that the soft tissue calcifications in orofacial region were more common in women and were found to be increased above 40 years of age.

Forensic odontology deals with the evidence pertaining to the oral and paraoral structures. Dentists are equipped with knowledge of orofacial structures and their variations prevailing among different ancestry. By implicating the history of dental treatments to the identification process, dentists extract unique and accurate information that aids in forensic identification. Crimes such as child abuse and domestic violence are often identified by the dentists during routine dental examinations and this can be used as an evidence to discern malefactors in such cases. This article provides a collective review of applications and methods in forensic odontology that helps legal authorities in the identification of individuals.
