ABSTRACTVitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, synthesised in response to sunlight. The active form is 1, 25-(OH)2D. It plays an important role in bone health, serum calcium and phosphate levels. Recent epidemiologic studies have observed relationships between low vitamin D levels and multiple disease states. Low vitamin D levels are associated with osteomalacia in adults, autoimmune and infectious diseases, diabetes mellitus, increased risk of fall and fractures, cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Here vitamin D physiology, metabolism, deficiency and new recommendations for supplementation are reviewed by taking into consideration new findings published in the literature.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
