Book Reviews All five chapters manage to cover considerable ground, but make few connections to one another. The first chapter, ostensibly an introduction, rapidly closes in on the technology of Noah's ark. While this is tremendously useful, particularly for performance, it does not provide any guidance for the ensuing chapters. Next, Davidson casts new hght on the old discussion of pageant wagons, providing firm evidence for the existence and structure of steering mechanisms. The third chapter covers the staging of the Passion, but tends to shift elusively from subject to subject, from costuming to crowd scenes. Chapter four, on textile industries and their pageants, is perhaps the most exciting, particularly in how it details both the construction and final appearance of costumes. But the fifth chapter, which discusses the machinery used to lower and lift actors from heaven to earth to hell and back again, feels like it starts from scratch. A conclusion is clearly lacking, leaving the reader awash in a sea of endnotes.
