Carmen 20 of Paulinus of Nola offers unusually vivid evidence for the synthesis of Christian cult and pre-Christian ritual practice at the tomb of Saint Felix. Paulinus consciously fashioned a Christian context for the continuation of certain sacrificial and votive practices that were firmly embedded in the cultural logic of the Italian countryside. In contrast to some contemporaries, Paulinus encouraged a compromise on the issue of animal sacrifice that not only enhanced the reputation and visibility of Felix's shrine, but facilitated the conversion of the rural population around Nola.
