To determine the ethical problems faced by dental practitioners, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in Bapuji Dental College and Hospital, College of Dental Sciences and private dental clinics in the city of Davangere. A questionnaire with close-ended questions on eight scenarios was administered to the 135 study participants. In the case of scenario 1, 81.4% of the participants said that the doctor had violated the principle of truthfulness. As for scenario 2, less than 50% of the participants replied that the doctor had breached ethical principles. In case scenario 3, 93% felt that the doctor should have taken the physician's opinion before extracting a tooth. Most dental practitioners faced ethical dilemmas because of the lack of awareness, and there is a need to introduce certain programmes to promote knowledge of ethics.
Background: Nowadays, amorphous calcium phosphate-casein phosphopeptide and tricalcium phosphate are being incorporated into fluoride varnishes to enhance remineralization potential which might interfere with antibacterial effect of fluoride in varnishes. Aim of study was to evaluate and compare the antimicrobial property of sodium fluoride varnish reinforced with amorphous calcium phosphate-casein phosphopeptide and tricalcium phosphate against streptococcus mutans. Methods: In the clinical setting, trial was conducted involving 18, 14-15 year old school children, randomly allocated into three interventional groups, Group A (5% Sodium fluoride varnish, Fluoritop-SR varnish), Group B (5% Sodium fluoride -Tricalcium phosphate varnish, Clinpro White varnish) and Group C (5% Sodium fluoride-amorphous calcium phosphate-casein phosphopeptide varnish, MI Varnish) to receive the varnish application. Saliva samples were collected at the end of one hour after varnish application for S Mutans count estimation. Student's paired 't' test and One way -ANOVA tests were used for statistical analyses. Results: Significant reductions in salivary streptococcus mutans count at one hour was achieved with application of B & C varnishes compared to varnish A. Conclusion: amorphous calcium phosphate-casein phosphopeptide and tricalcium phosphate varnish groups exhibited better antimicrobial property against streptococcus mutans compared to Sodium fluoride varnish at one-hour post intervention.
Context: Public Health Dentistry, a unique specialty, which focuses on oral health issues in communities rather than in individual patients. Among the various disciplines of dentistry, it is unfortunate that though Public Health Dentistry forms the basis of dental health care services and holds the key for developing awareness about the social aspects of the profession, it is often given less priority by the students as a choice for postgraduate training. Aims: To explore the attitude of dental undergraduate students towards Public Health Dentistry as their career choice. Methods and Material: A cross sectional questionnaire survey was done among 103 interns of Davangere city. Data regarding their attitude was collected using a Questionnaire. Statistical analysis used: Descriptive data was generated in percentages and tables and graphs were used to describe the data and chi-square test to assess categorical data. Results: Majority of the participants were females (61.2%) and had joined Dentistry by chance (45.6%. Oral surgery was more preferred (30.2%) followed by Conservative dentistry (24.2%). The participants found Public Health Dentistry subject to be good (66.0%) but were undecided to choose as their careers (52.4%). They agreed that this subject offered easy employment (34.0%), was essential for increasing awareness about oral health in society (51.5%), gave a chance to be a good academician (63.1%) and offered opportunities abroad (49.5%). Conclusions: The participants found that the subject to be interesting and were also agreed on the different aspects of this subject. Efforts to increase awareness among undergraduates should be considered.
