English communication is a crucial skill that should be mastered by students at the university level due to the demand of study skills comprehension. Nevertheless, students still have low motivation and lack of practicing English proficiency as substantial ability in academic field. This condition is strengthened by the limited owing to the required time in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes. Covering the ongoing situation, information and communications technology (ICT) presents an virtual educational setting that is able to provide accessible effective materials to assist participants in learning. In addition, the task-based approach is taken based on the students’ need to practice authentic English through meaningful tasks. This study aims at analyzing the students’ perceptions on the implementation of integrating ICT into EAP materials through a task-based approach and identifying the implications. We employ descriptive qualitative method, where a survey was carried out to obtain some information about the students’ viewpoint regarding the materials. This results reveals that the practice of integrating ICT into English Academic Purposes (EAP) materials through task-based approach promotes students’ motivation and gains meaningful learning experiences.
<p>The use of a blog as a platform for extensive reading becomes valuable since it provides the possibility of readership and opportunity for interaction and collaboration. As the online journal facilitating users to display information in chronological order and connected to the Internet, the blog also can help students to get a wide variety of reading materials, which should be conducted in extensive reading activities. However, the use of a blog in this study is integrated with the process of learning in the classroom so that the students can use it for reporting their reading activities and share what they read beyond the classroom. This study is conducted during one semester in one of the universities in Indonesia using six students of the first grade joining an extensive reading course as the participants. In this research, a case study is used as a research method. It aims at analyzing the students' perception of the use of blogs in extensive reading. Findings show that the blog is beneficial for promoting the students' reading interest, building autonomy and creativity, and providing a reflective platform. The blog consists of several features allowing students to get the numerous reading sources that are appropriate with their language level and interest. Therefore, it becomes useful since it can facilitate students to build their responsibility to select their reading material and to reflect the progress of their learning activities.<strong></strong></p>
This study is to reveal the gap between the English language communicative competence required by students of the hospitality department and English learning program provided at state of Vocational High School 1 Tasikmalaya, Indonesia, drawing through qualitative evaluation approach, including semi-structured interviews and observations. It explores how learning needs is implemented in teaching-learning process and the respondents' description, what they saw and what they felt. Findings show inconsistency between learning needs in enrichment students' English communicative competence and teaching-learning process. This prompts a re-instructional design of English learning for hospitality specific purposes program at this department currently. It provides to support of graduating required at hospitality industry workplace. Lead of recommendations, in terms of both the instructional design including materials development, teaching method usage and the professional development of ESP teachers, to address an understanding of the gap identified, so that students will enable to communicate more effectively with the English, in such contexts graduates can hire at the hospitality industry workplace.
Writing skill is a productive language skills that should be mastered by vocational students. It has become a critical issue in the study of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and a challenging one in Indonesian context in the context of English as Foreign Language learning. This paper aims to investigate the impact of PBworks media application on vocational students’ collaborative writing skill. The research used the experimental approach. The respondents included 60 vocational students selected randomly and divided into two groups with 30 students in the control group and 30 students in the experimental group. The PBworks media was applied in the experimental group, while the control group received face-to-face writing class without incorporating learning media. The data were obtained by comparing student scores in the pre-test and two post-tests. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to obtain the result. It showed that there is a statistically significant difference between using PBworks and non-Pbworks media in regard to the students’ writing performance (p < .05). Moreover, vocational students believe in the benefit of the PBworks media application in developing collaborative writing skill despite the disadvantages.
The main purposes of this study were to (1) find out students’ English communication skill and their perceptions concerning with English proficiencies for employees of hospitality industry field; and (2) identify students’ entry behaviors and their characteristics. The descriptive inquiry was used in identifying students’ present situation drawing through semi-structured interviews and observations. Purposively selected of the respondents, consist of: English teachers and students’ 3rd class who have done field work practice in the hotel. The findings show that students had low English speaking competence caused they seldom practiced and learned to communicate using English in previous studying activities. Furthermore, they had low ambition to learn and practice English communication but they realized the importance of having English speaking competence as employees’ requirement in the hospitality industry field specifically
