Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that migraine is accompanied by spontaneous brain activity alterations in specific regions. However, these findings are inconsistent, thus hindering our understanding of the potential neuropathology. Hence, we performed a quantitative whole‐brain meta‐analysis of relevant resting‐state functional imaging studies to identify brain regions consistently involved in migraine. A systematic search of studies that investigated the differences in spontaneous brain activity patterns between migraineurs and healthy controls up to April 2022 was conducted. We then performed a whole‐brain voxel‐wise meta‐analysis using the anisotropic effect size version of seed‐based d mapping software. Complementary analyses including jackknife sensitivity analysis, heterogeneity test, publication bias test, subgroup analysis, and meta‐regression analysis were conducted as well. In total, 24 studies that reported 31 datasets were finally eligible for our meta‐analysis, including 748 patients and 690 controls. In contrast to healthy controls, migraineurs demonstrated consistent and robust decreased spontaneous brain activity in the angular gyrus, visual cortex, and cerebellum, while increased activity in the caudate, thalamus, pons, and prefrontal cortex. Results were robust and highly replicable in the following jackknife sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis. Meta‐regression analyses revealed that a higher visual analog scale score in the patient sample was associated with increased spontaneous brain activity in the left thalamus. These findings provided not only a comprehensive overview of spontaneous brain activity patterns impairments, but also useful insights into the pathophysiology of dysfunction in migraine.
Background Lung cancer is the first cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an independent risk factor for lung cancer. An epidemiological survey discovered that the presence of COPD increases the risk of lung cancer by 4.5‐fold. Lobectomy is considered to be the standard surgical method for early stage non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the influence of lobectomy on the loss of pulmonary function has not been fully investigated in NSCLC patients with COPD. Methods We searched the PubMed database using the following strategies: COPD and pulmonary function test (MeSH term) and lobectomy (MeSH term) from 01 January 1990 to 01 January 2019. We selected the articles of patients with COPD. A total of six studies, including 195 patients with COPD, provided lung function values before and after surgery. Results Five out of six studies focused on the short‐term change of pulmonary function (within 3–6 months) after lobectomy, and the average loss of FEV1 was 0.11 L (range: −0.33–0.09 L). One study investigated the long‐term change of pulmonary function (within 1–2 years) after lobectomy, and the average loss of FEV1 was 0.15 L (range: −0.29–0.05 L). Conclusions A short‐term (3–6 months) loss of pulmonary function after operation is acceptable for lung cancer patients with COPD. However, there may be a high risk of postoperative complications in NSCLC patients with COPD. Therefore, surgical treatment needs to be carefully considered for these patients.
Background: To systematic review the safety and effectiveness between uterine artery embolization (UAE), surgery and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in the treatment of uterine fibroids. Methods:The PubMed, EMbase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Wanfang Data, and CNKI were electronically searched to collect relevant studies on comparing the safety and effectiveness of UAE, surgery and HIFU in the treatment of uterine fibroids from January 2000 to August 2019. After two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted the data and evaluated the risk of bias of included studies, network meta-analysis was performed by ADDIS 1.16.8 and Stata 14 software.Results: A total of 11 studies (22 articles) involving 3,646 patients were included. Compared with surgery, UAE and HIFU patients had higher quality of life (1-year follow-up) improvement, and UAE was higher than HIFU. Network meta-analysis show that patients treated with HIFU had the lowest incidence of major complications within 1 year, followed by UAE, and the highest surgery. Patients treated with HIFU and UAE have shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery time than surgery. The rate of further intervention after surgery treatment might be lower than that of UAE and HIFU.Conclusions: UAE has the highest quality of life improvement (1-year follow-up) for uterine fibroids.HIFU and UAE are safer with shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery time compared with surgery. However, both UAE and HIFU have the risks of re-treatment. However, limited by the number and quality of included studies, the above conclusions need to be verified through more high-quality studies.
Currently, comparative studies evaluating the quantification accuracy of pyramidal tracts (PT) and PT branches that were tracked based on four mainstream diffusion models are deficient. The present study aims to evaluate four mainstream models using the high-quality Human Connectome Project (HCP) dataset. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), diffusion spectral imaging (DSI), generalized Q-space sampling imaging (GQI), and Q-ball imaging (QBI) were used to construct the PT and PT branches in 50 healthy volunteers from the HCP. False and true PT fibers were identified based on anatomic information. One-way repeated measure analysis of variance and post hoc paired-sample t-test were performed to identify the best PT and PT branch quantification model. The number, percentage, and density of true fibers of PT obtained based on GQI and QBI were significantly larger than those based on DTI and DSI (all p < 0.0005, Bonferroni corrected), whereas false fibers yielded the opposite results (all p < 0.0005, Bonferroni corrected). More trunk branches (PTtrunk) were present in the four diffusion models compared with the upper limb (PTUlimb), lower limb (PTLlimb), and cranial (PTcranial) branches. In addition, significantly more true fibers were obtained in PTtrunk, PTUlimb, and PTLlimb based on the GQI and QBI compared with DTI and DSI (all p < 0.0005, Bonferroni corrected). Finally, GQI-based group probabilistic maps showed that the four PT branches exhibited relatively unique spatial distributions. Therefore, the GQI and QBI represent better diffusion models for the PT and PT branches. The group probabilistic maps of PT branches have been shared with the public to facilitate more precise studies on the plasticity of and the damage to the motor pathway.
Schizophrenia (SCZ) is an idiopathic psychiatric disorder with a heritable component and a substantial public health impact. Although abnormalities in total brain volumetric measures (TBVMs) have been found in patients with SCZ, it is still unknown whether these abnormalities have a causal effect on the risk of SCZ. Here, we performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate the possible causal associations between each TBVM and SCZ risk. Specifically, genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of total gray matter volume, total white matter volume, total cerebrospinal fluid volume, and total brain volume were obtained from the United Kingdom Biobank database (33,224 individuals), and SCZ GWAS summary statistics were provided by the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (150,064 individuals). The main MR analysis was conducted using the inverse variance weighted method, and other MR methods, including MR-Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode methods, were performed to assess the robustness of our findings. For pleiotropy analysis, we employed three approaches: MR-Egger intercept, MR-PRESSO, and heterogeneity tests. No TBVM was causally associated with SCZ risk according to the MR results, and no significant pleiotropy or heterogeneity was found for instrumental variables. Taken together, this study suggested that alterations in TBVMs were not causally associated with the risk of SCZ.
