In the last few decades, the presence of pharmaceutical products in the environment is known under the name of emerging contaminants. These substances can enter the aquatic environment via different sources, as parent compounds, metabolites or a combination of both. In this work, we have investigated the presence of four pharmaceutical active compounds belonging to the group of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), in wastewater, surface water and drinking water of Algiers, which have a direct impact on the Mediterranean Sea. The target analytes (ibuprofen (IBU), naproxen (NAP), ketoprofen (KET), and diclofenac (DIC)), were extracted from the water samples by using Solid Phase Extraction Oasis ® HLB Cartridges; the identification and quantification were realized by Gas ChromatographyeMass Spectrometry (GCeMS). To obtain the best resolution and precision, N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (MSTFA) was used as the derivatization reagent and ibuprofen-d 3 was used as the internal standard. The obtained recoveries were good, ranging from 82% for ketoprofen to 120% for naproxen with relatively small standard deviations ( 20%). The target compounds were detected in wastewater, influent/effluent with concentrations ranging from 155.5 to 6554 ng/L, implicating removal efficiencies of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), between 30.3 and 95%. The surface water was also contaminated with pharmaceuticals from 72.9 ng/L for diclofenac to 228.3 ng/L for naproxen. In addition, the occurrence of ibuprofen and ketoprofen in drinking water, at concentrations of 142.1 and 110.9 ng/L, respectively, attracts concerns about possible impacts on human health.
Recent evidence suggests that polychlorinated biphenyls might also have adverse reproductive, developmental and endocrine effects. Although, the use of polychlorobiphenyls in Algeria has been banned for more than two decades, large quantities of these compounds containing products remain disseminated, mainly stored in obsolete or damaged equipments. This research describes a study to assess polychlorinated biphenyls distribution in marine sediments collected from the seaside of Tamentfoust touristic resort located in the eastern side of Algiers Bay. After microwave-assisted extraction and purification with both concentrated sulphuric acid and activated silica gel, the extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography with an electron capture detector. Relatively high contamination levels of polychlorinated biphenyls were found in samples collected from the port of Tamentfoust (15 to 70 ng/g d.w.), while the concentrations were lower in the stations located outside the port (0 to 26 ng/g d.w.). Compared with data previously reported by some other researchers, the polychlorobiphenyls concentrations found in this work showed an environmental persistence, but a decrease of approximately 5 times in 30 year i.e since the ban of the use of polychlorinated biphenyls. The predominant polychlorinated biphenyls congeners in all sediment samples were polychlorinated biphenyls138, 153, 180 and 187. This composition was similar to industrial mixture (Aroclor 1260). This probably indicated that the contamination originated from the port and has a continental source.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants with significant bioaccumulation in the global environment. Owing to their high toxicity and lipophilic property, PCBs are potential threat to the human and ecological system.The objective of this work was to investigate the polychlorinated biphenyls in seawater and blue mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in the eastern coastal side of the Algiers bay. Surface and bottom water samples were collected at six different periods from July to October 2002 in the port of Tamentfoust and four locations around the port. Mussel samples were collected from Tamentfoust port and Surcouf beach. After extraction, the PCBs levels were determined in marine water and biological samples by gas chromatography with electron capture detector. Total polychlorinated biphenyls concentrations varied from 4.0 to 18.8 ng Á L À1 in surface and from 4.4 to 16.6 ng Á L À1 in bottom seawater and were relatively high in August (30th and 45th days).In mussels that concentrate the organochlorinated compounds in their tissues, the sum of ICES 7 PCBs concentrations was relatively high. It ranged from 64.2 to 185.8 ng Á g À1 dw (average 125.8 ng Á g À1 dw) in samples collected from Surcouf. The level of contamination in Tamentfoust port mussels was about twice higher (225.2 ng Á g À1 dw).The observed PCBs distribution was close to that of common commercial mixture and suggests an industrial origin of this pollution emitted from a continental source in addition to the port activities. Although the use of target compounds has been banned for more than three decades, they are still persistent in Algiers Bay.
