In this paper efforts have been made to explain the manufacturing method of Manganese-Zinc (Mn-Zn) soft ferrites in detail along with its uses and applications. The same method is applicable to Nickel-Zinc (Ni-Zn) and Lithium Titanium (Li-Ti or Microwave) ferrites also. A process flow chart is shown. The manufacturing steps like-mixing of powders, calcination of powder, grinding of powder, granules making, pressing of components, sintering in tunnel kiln or box furnace and machining on rotary table grinding machine, have been explained. Effect of atmosphere (oxygen), when the components are sintered at high temperature, is discussed. The temperature profiles of muffle furnace and tunnel kilns have also been discussed. The variation in temperature within the muffle furnace (900×900×800 mm) has been studied with the help of a sliding thermocouple. Temperature gradient within the furnace volume has been plotted on graph. A mathematical relation has been found using curve fitting equation. Actual and mathematical results have been compared.
A number of processes are used for the preparation of composite materials depending on the required properties and choice of material system. Some of these are mentioned here such as Al-SiC, Al-Al 2 O 3 , Mg-SiC, Mg-Al 2 O 3 of high specific strength , stiffness, temperature resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, wear resistance and thermal conductivity are prepared by fusion infiltration, extrusion, forging, gravity and die casting while PbC and Pb-Al 2 O 3 for high stiffness and creep resistance are prepared by fusion infiltration only [13]. Cu-W for burn up resistance and Pb-C and Brass-Teflon for load carrying capacity and wear resistance are prepared by powder metallurgy and infiltration. Similarly Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) for Al-Al 2 O 3 , High Pressure Torsion (HPT) for Cu-Fe composite, Hot pressing for Cu-Al 2 O 3 composite, hot extrusion for Mg-Al 2 O 3 , Sintering for Cu-MgO, Microwave sintering for Co-WC, Plasma spraying for Al-CNT, High velocity oxyfuel spraying (HVOS) for Ni-Al 2 O 3 , Cold spraying for Co-WC. Some other techniques such as spark plasma sintering, sol-gel and electrodeposition are also available for the preparation of metal matrix nanocomposites.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
