The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of an educational documentary, MY MASCULINITY HELPS ( MMH), as a sexual violence prevention tool. MMH is a short (i.e., 31 min) educational documentary that explores the role of African American men and boys in the prevention of sexual violence. Participants ( N = 88) completed an electronic, qualitative questionnaire after viewing the documentary and data collected were analyzed and interpreted using thematic analysis. Findings from the study highlighted the power of documentary film to impact knowledge, beliefs, social norms related to masculinity and the role of African American men as allies, empowerment, and commitment to action. Implications of MMH as a prosocial bystander behavior intervention and educational tool are discussed.
Dissemination (PAID) project at one institution in 2008-2012, which were themselves adapted from earlier ADVANCE projects, have been applied to address issues of equity and inclusion for doctoral students in science, technology, engineering and mathematical sciences (STEM) graduate programs at three institutions. We detail the successful elements of the ADVANCE PAID project; the steps taken to evaluate, adapt and integrate them into a comprehensive model of change for an Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) project; and the impact of the AGEP project to date. We then generalize this process to provide recommendations for scholar-practitioners wishing to integrate elements of past ADVANCE and AGEP projects into current and future initiatives for lasting institutional change.
The purpose of this study was to develop a measurement instrument that scholars and practitioners in international education can use as a means of exploring whether and how individuals who come into contact with international education programs develop a greater sense of cultural humility. Specifically, the study described here outlines the four steps used to develop a nine-item Cultural Humility Self-Assessment Scale (CHS-A): item generation, content validity, item reduction, and scale reliability and validity. These efforts resulted in a valid and reliable instrument that individuals who work in international education can use to evaluate and improve programs and initiatives.
