Abstract— Methylene blue sensitizes photoinactivation of E. coli ribosomes. This photoinactivation shows dose‐dependent minor changes in the ribosome particles. The ribosomal RNA extracted from irradiated ribosomes also shows small changes. On gel electrophoresis the 23S ribosomal RNA band decreases in intensity at low doses with a corresponding increase in the minor band which moves slightly faster than the 23S band. The appearance of this minor band is dose‐dependent. The other major ribosomal component (16S ribosomal RNA) is relatively stable. The S6 protein is one of the first proteins to decrease in intensity at low doses followed by fairly marked changes in some of the other proteins, at high doses.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
