Few man-made structures existed in the epicentral regions, since the population was fairly small. Damage to structures was generally minor or nonexistent despite the geologic and seismographic evidences of a major earthquake. It is curious that the major structural damage in terms of dollar loss appears to have occurred at Sacramento, California, which is about 185 air line miles from the surface faulting.
This study has been restricted to the building structures in the epicentral region plus significant structural damage elsewhere.
