Background: Multiple choice question (MCQ) assessments are becoming popular means to assess knowledge for many screening examinations among several fields including Medicine. The single best answer MCQs may also test higher-order thinking skills. Hence, MCQs remain useful assessment gadget. Objectives: 1) To evaluate Multiple Choice Questions for testing their quality. 2) To explore the association between difficulty index (p-value) and discrimination indices (DI) with distractor efficiency (DE). 3) To study the occurrence of functioning distractors for MCQs. Methods: Total five MCQ test sessions were conducted among interns of a medical institute of Ahmedabad city Gujarat, between April 2016 to March 2017, as part of their compulsory rotating postings in the department. The average participation in each of the sessions was 17 interns, thus a total of 85 interns getting enrolled. For each test session, the questionnaire consisted of forty MCQs having 4 options including a single best answer. The MCQs were analyzed for difficulty index (DIF-I, p-value), discrimination index (DI), and distractor efficiency (DE). Results: Total 85 interns attended the tests consisting of total 200 MCQ items (questions) from four major medical disciplines namely - Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Community Medicine. Mean test scores of each test ranged from 36.0% to 45.8%.The reliability of the tests, the Kuder Richardson (KR) 20, ranged from 0.29 to 0.52. The standard error of Measurement ranged from 2.59 to 2.79.Out of total 200 MCQs, seventy nine (n=79) had Discrimination index (DI) <0.15 (poor), and 61 had DI ≥0.35 (excellent). Easy items having average DE of all tests was 20.1%. Conclusions: Items having average difficulty and high discrimination with functioning distractors should be incorporated into tests to improve the validity of the assessment.
Introduction:Overall improvement in the living standards of country's population is leading to longer life expectancy. To emphasize the medical and psychological difficulties faced by geriatric people is essential to know status of their quality of life (QOL).Methodology:A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out at urban field practice area of one of the teaching institutes of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Considering the prevalence of about 7.5% of 60 years and above people sample size of 250 was calculated. A predesigned questionnaire related to the QOL of elderly people devised by the World Health Organization-QOL was used. Results:Mean age of the study population was 65.8 years with standard deviation of 5 years. Almost two-thirds of geriatrics were currently married and having spouse alive. List of common morbidities observed among study population was joint pain (42.8%), cataract (32.8%), hypertension (22.4%), diabetes mellitus (17.2%), and dental problems (12.4%). Scoring of QOL profile revealed that none of the geriatric had poor QOL, whereas 56% fall into category “good” and 50.8% had “excellent” QOL. QOL as per four different domains was significantly better among males as compared to females. Physical, environmental, and psychological domains were better in those who were educated and married individuals living with their spouse. Conclusion:Overall QOL was good to excellent. Social characteristics, such as education, marital status, and gender, all play role for the perceived QOL among the respondents.
Background: Sex selective abortion and Female feticide are growing problems across the world, especially among third world countries like India. Level of awareness and views regarding preventing the same must also be considered among those who are pregnant, before expecting a social change 'favourable' to the 'girl child'. Aims & Objective: To study the attitudes and awareness towards issues of female feticide among suburban pregnant women. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on antenatal women of the community of Saijpur ward attending government antenatal clinics of the area. A sample of 200 pregnant women was interviewed using pre-tested Performa taking their consent. Institutional ethical consent was obtained beforehand and the data were analyzed. Results: Out of all 31.5% and 14.5% preferred to have a male and female child, respectively as their current pregnancy outcome. Less than half (43.5%, n=87) of the respondents were aware about the term 'Female feticide' in local language. Most of them (n=183, 91.5%) were aware of the term 'Pre-natal sex determination' in their local language. None of the graduate respondents would have liked to go for abortion, had the fetus sex been determined beforehand. Conclusion: Socio-demographic factors play a role in women's awareness for female feticide. Education forms a critical role for her attitudes towards 'female feticide'. Television and Health-care providers proved to be better sources for awareness generation than others did.
BACKGROUND Smartphone use has gone tremendously up throughout the world during the past decade and addiction potential is well documented among the users. Smartphone addiction among adolescents and young adults should be seen with caution as they lay the foundations not only for their healthy lives but also of the country’s future and its economy, they live in. METHODS Both school and college students aged between 15 - 24 years were enrolled in this cross sectional study, using systematic random sampling technique to determine smartphone addiction potential through Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS). The possible factors contributing to SAS scores were also determined through statistical tests (Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann Whitney U test). RESULTS Among a total of 239 respondents of age 15 to 24 years (mean age 18.5 ± 2.35 years), there were 124 (51.9 %) females and 231 (96.7 %) belonged to the urban area. Most of the participants were studying in high school (40.6 %) followed by medical field (40.2 %). A total of 110 (46 %), students had used their smartphone commonly for social media purpose, followed by entertainment purpose (29.3 %), education (36 %), web surfing (20 %). The median daily usage of smartphone was found to be 4 hours among participants. The mean score of SAS was found to be 103.59 ± 25.08. There was statistically significant difference in SAS score according to age group, according to their smartphone usage per day, according to common purpose of usage of smartphone and also according to their streams, and monthly expenses the student spends to recharge their smartphone. CONCLUSIONS Smartphone addiction potential was determined according to various social and demographic characteristics. Factors causing smartphone addiction should be tackled by multiple stakeholders to reduce the chances of addiction due to smartphone and to protect them from future health consequences.
