When iron is evaporated in a dilute atmosphere of helium the deposit consists of very small particles whose size depends primarily on the helium pressure. If these particles are allowed to fall on to a ferromagnetic specimen they deposit preferentially at the domain boundaries. The Bitter patterns so formed can be examined optically or, for high resolution work, may be replicated and examined in the electron microscope.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
