Background In the past few months, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused extensive economic and social damage. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of COVID-19–related measures on partner relationships and sexual and reproductive health in China. Methods From May 1 to 5, 2020, 3500 young Chinese individuals were recruited through WeChat or Weibo to participate in a survey to obtain information on sexual and reproductive health (eg, sexual desire, frequency of sexual intercourse, sexual satisfaction, etc). The questionnaire also collected demographic data (eg, age, race, education, current financial status, sexual orientation, relationship status, etc). Results In total, 967 participants were included in the sexual health analysis. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures, 22% of participants (n=212) reported a decrease in sexual desire; 41% (n=396) experienced a decrease in the sexual intercourse frequency; 30% (n=291) reported an increase in the frequency of masturbation; 20% (n=192) reported a decrease in alcohol consumption before or during sexual activities, and 31% (n=298) reported a deterioration in partner relationships during the pandemic. The logistic regression analysis indicated that the following influenced partner relationships: accommodations during the pandemic (P=.046; odds ratio [OR] 0.59; 95% CI 0.30-0.86); exclusive relationship status (yes or no) (P<.001; OR 0.44; 95 % CI 0.27-0.73); sexual desire (P=.02; OR 2.01; 95% CI 1.38-2.97); and sexual satisfaction (P<.001; OR 1.92; 95% CI 1.54-2.50). COVID-19 also caused disruptions in reproductive health services such as prenatal and postnatal care, childbirth and abortion services, contraception availability, and the management of sexually transmitted infections. Conclusions Our results show that many young people have wide-ranging issues affecting their sexual and reproductive health due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. Strategies and guidelines are needed to safeguard the sexual and reproductive health of young people during this pandemic.
Introduction Although the new classification of premature ejaculation (PE) has been proposed by Waldinger et al., there have been few studies investigating the four PE syndromes in China. Aims We investigated the prevalence and factors associated with the complaint of PE and the four PE syndromes in Anhui province, China. Methods Between September 2011 and September 2012, subjects were selected from five cities in Anhui province, China. They participated in this survey by completing a detailed verbal questionnaire regarding their demographic data and medical and sexual history. Men with PE complaint were diagnosed as lifelong PE (LPE), acquired PE (APE), natural variable PE (NVPE), or premature-like ejaculatory dysfunction (PLED). Main Outcome Measures PE complaint was divided into four PE syndromes. Anxiety, depression, and erectile dysfunction were independently assessed by the self-rating anxiety/depression scale and the international index of erectile function-5, respectively. Results Of the 3,016 men evaluated, 25.80% complained of PE. The distribution of the four PE syndromes in men with PE complaint was in the order of NVPE (44.09%), PLPE (24.81%), APE (18.77%), and LPE (12.34%). Patients with PE complaint were older and more likely to smoke, had more comorbidities, and a higher body mass index (BMI) than patients without the complaint (P < 0.001 for all). Similar findings were also observed in patients with APE compared with other PE patients (depression P = 0.012, cardiovascular P = 0.003, others P < 0.001). In addition, the rates of counseling by a doctor in men with LPE and APE were higher than those in men with NVPE and PLED (P < 0.001). Conclusion The prevalence of PE complaint in male population of Anhui province, China, was 25.80%, with the highest PE syndromes being NVPE and PLPE. Patients with PE complaint or APE were older and more likely to smoke, had more comorbidities, and a higher BMI.
Abstract-The lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor LOX-1 mediates endothelial cell (EC) uptake of experimentally prepared copper-oxidized LDL (oxLDL). To confirm the atherogenic role of this receptor cloned against copper-oxLDL, we examined whether it mediates EC uptake of L5, an electronegative LDL abundant in dyslipidemic but not normolipidemic human plasma. Hypercholesterolemic (LDL-cholesterol, Ͼ160 mg/dL) human LDL was fractionated into L1-L5, increasingly electronegative, by ion-exchange chromatography. In cultured bovine aortic ECs (BAECs), L5 upregulated LOX-1 and induced apoptosis. Transfection of BAECs with LOX-1-specific small interfering RNAs (siLOX-1) minimized baseline LOX-1 production and restrained L5-induced LOX-1 upregulation. Internalization of labeled L1-L5 was monitored in BAECs and human umbilical venous ECs by fluorescence microscopy. LOX-1 knockdown with siLOX-1 impeded the endocytosis of L5 but not L1-L4. In contrast, blocking LDL receptor with RAP (LDL receptor-associated protein) stopped the internalization of L1-L4 but not L5. Although chemically different, L5 and oxLDL competed for EC entry through LOX-1. Via LOX-1, L5 signaling hampered Akt phosphorylation and suppressed EC expression of fibroblast growth factor-2 and Bcl-2. L5 also selectively inhibited Bcl-xL expression and endothelial nitric oxide synthase phosphorylation but increased synthesis of Bax, Bad, and tumor necrosis factor-␣.
