The Indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) has a diploid chromosome number of 7 in the male and 6 in the female, the lowest number yet described in a mammal. Its near relative, Reeve's muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) has a diploid number of 46, and the karyotypes of the two, species are very different.
Chromosomes of species from four bovid tribes are discussed in this paper. Two of the tribes are characterized by species with translocations or other unusual features involving the sex chromosomes. The other two tribes are characterized by a complete lack of unusual sex-chromosome arrangements. Groupings by sex-chromosome characteristics are consistent with classical taxonomic categories.
