Background:Dental esthetics has become a great concern for both dental practitioners and patients in addition to maintaining oral health. The presence of interproximal papillae between the maxillary anterior teeth is a key esthetic component. Recession of interdental papilla leads to various functional problems such as food impaction, phonetics and esthetic problems such as the formation of black triangle which poses a great challenge.Aim:This study aims to evaluate the augmentation of interdental papilla with platelet-rich fibrin.Materials and Methods:A total of 25 sites from systemically healthy individuals with papillary recession (Nordland and Tarnow class 1 and 2) were recruited in the study. Han and Takei procedure was planned and augmentation was done with platelet-rich fibrin. Various parameters such as distance from the tip of the contact point to the gingival margin, width of the keratinized gingiva, and Jemt score were measured at baseline, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Healing index was measured at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd week postoperatively. Results:Data collected were statistically analyzed. Mean value of distance from the contact point to the gingival margin was 4.38 mm at baseline and at 6-month postoperatively, it reduced to 0.36 mm. There was an increase in width of the keratinized gingiva which was clinically and statistically significant. Other parameters such as healing index, Jemt score, and visual analog scale (aesthetics) were also statistically significant postoperatively.
Background: Recession is a mucogingival condition affecting teeth causing hypersensitivity. Although many techniques are there for recession coverage, semilunar vestibular incision technique (SVIT) is a novel procedure for management of multiple gingival recession in maxillary teeth. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of root coverage in maxillary teeth with multiple gingival recession using SVIT. Methodology: Twenty systemically healthy patients were recruited with Miller's class I and II gingival recessions in maxillary teeth. Parameters such as recession height (RH), recession weight (RW), avascular surface area (ASA), width of keratinized gingiva (WKG), width of attached gingiva (WAG), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were measured at baseline three and six months post-surgery. Results: The outcome measures were statistically significant at baseline, three and six months. A reduction of 86% was achieved in terms of RH and RW. Gain in WKG and WAG as achieved at six-month follow-up was 31.5% and 55%, respectively. An 87% decrease in ASA was obtained and reduction in CAL was 82.4%. Between three and six months there was a significant increase in WAG. Conclusion: SVIT results in improved measures of attached gingiva on six-month follow-up.
Interdental papilla plays a vital role in determining aesthetics. Loss of interdental papilla is seen as unaesthetic black triangles in the interdental space. To regenerate the lost papilla, various techniques have been tried. In most of the techniques, connective tissue grafts are used to fill the space. This case report presents augmentation of interdental papilla using Han & Takei method with use of platelet rich fibrin. The advantage of using PRF is that there is no secondary surgical site involvement and patient acceptability & comfort is much greater.
