AIC50808M 5-Methyl derivatives of 2A-C2B5H7 have been prepared by the aluminum chloride catalyzed reaction of methyl chloride with the parent c/aso-carborane. Positional preference for substitution follows the order 5,6 > 1,7 > 3 which is in agreement with an electrophilic substitution mechanism. Boron-11 and proton nuclear magnetic resonance data are reported and an antipodal chemical shift effect is noted for the 1,7 position.
SynopsisThe copolymerization of a small amount of the larger (C~BS and C~BIO) carboranes with the smaller ClBs carborane resulted in the format.ion of an elastomeric SiB-1 carboranesiloxane, a polymer hitherto prepared only in crystalline form. Although the elastomeric behavior of the uncured SiB-1 copolymer decreased with time, curing stabilized the rubber by inhibiting crystallization.
