The use of the Gibbs equation in determining the adsorption of a surface-active electrolyte is discussed. The effect of excess inorganic salt on the amounts of sodium dodecyl sulphate adsorbed at the interface of a standard decane emulsion has been determined. Interfacial tension measurements on the same systems show that results consistent with the direct adsorption data are obtained, provided that a factor of 2 is included in the approximate form of the Gibbs equation for solutions containing no inorganic salt. Equations of state for the adsorbed films are considered.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
