RESUMOwere used in the experiment. The animals were confined for 56 days in collective pens in a slotted floor sheep barn. The animals were randomly distributed, according to the feeding frequency: once, twice and three times/day. The diet (16.7% of CP and 70.3% TDN) was the same for all groups. The average daily gain, ration consumption, feed conversion, ingestive behavior and carcass characteristics were not affected by feeding frequency. Except for leg width, the other body measurements performed on the carcass were not influenced by feeding frequency. Among non-carcass live weight components, only yield of full intestine and digestive tract content were affected, because they were smaller for animals that received one feeding daily. The increase on feeding frequencies when diets containing 16.7% CP and 70.3% TDN were offered does not affect performance, the ingestive behavior and characteristics of carcass of confined lambs. Therefore, only one feeding per day can be used.
This study evaluates the effect of cashew nut meal (CNM), whole cottonseed (WCS), and calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids (Ca-LCFA) on the fatty acid profiles of meat from hair lambs. Thirty-five 60-d-old, male, noncastrated Santa Ines lambs with an initial average body weight of 13.00 ± 1.80 kg were used in a randomized complete-block design with 7 blocks and 5 treatments. The experimental treatments consisted of a control diet (CON) without supplemental lipids and 4 test diets with different lipid supplements that were selected according to the degree of protection from ruminal hydrogenation and their polyunsaturated fatty acid richness. The tests diets included the following modifications: supplementation with WCS, supplementation with CNM, supplementation with both cottonseed and CNM (CSCNM), and supplementation with Ca-LCFA. The C18:1n9c content was highest in the meat of the animals fed the CNM diet (42.00%). The meat from lambs fed the WCS and Ca-LCFA diets had higher C18:0 contents (25.23 and 22.80%, respectively). The C16:1 content was higher in the meat from the animals fed the CNM and CON diets (1.54 and 1.49%, respectively). C18:2c9t11 concentration was higher in the meat from the animals fed the Ca-LCFA and CNM diets. The estimated enzyme activity of Δ9-desaturase C18 was highest in the muscles of the lambs fed the CON, CNM, and CSCNM diets. The use of cashew nuts in the diet resulted in an increase in the C18:2c9t11 content of the lamb meat, which improved the nutritional characteristics of the fat.
Assessment of the productive efficiency of 30 primiparous Aberdeen Angus cows of different body sizes, classified at calving as heavy (375±10.5 kg) or light (283±7.7 kg), and different total milk-yield levels, classified as high (868±24.5 kg) or low (547±18.3 kg). Heavy cows were superior in weight at calving and weaning, but there were no differences in milk yield and weight at birth and weaning of calves. Heavy cows were less efficient than light cows in the production of kilograms of calves per 100 kg of cows at calving and at weaning. High milk producing cows were heavier at calving and had heavier calves at birth and weaning, but did not differ between the milk-yield levels for the variation in daily weight. The variation in daily weight of the calves was greater from high-producing cows. High milk producing dairy beef cows were more efficient at weaning, and their calves required less milk to produce one kilogram of live weight.
It was evaluated the feeding behavior of lambs fed diets containing 30% sorghum silage and 70% crambe cake (30:70 diet), and 70% sorghum silage and 30% crambe cake (70:30 diet) under voluntary and controlled consumption. The experimental design used was a 4 × 4 Latin square, with four animals, four periods, and four treatments; feeding behavior was determined by observation. The results indicated that animals fed the 30:70 diet showed higher DM and NDF (g day -1 ) than those fed the 70:30 diet. Animals fed the 70:30 diet showed longer feeding times (h kg -1 DM), mastication (min kg -1 DM and min kg -1 NDF), rumination (min day -1 and min kg -1 DM), and the largest number of mericics chewing per bolus; however, a higher feed efficiency (g DM h -1 ) was observed in the 30:70 diet group. Furthermore, animals feeding voluntarily had higher DM intake and chewed for longer. Therefore, the combined results indicated that crambe cake could be used in the diet of sheep without affecting feeding behavior.
RESUMOObjetivou-se neste estudo fracionar os carboidratos e as proteínas e avaliar a cinética de degradação ruminal de rações contendo 0; 24; 48 e 72% de torta de girassol. Os carboidratos foram fracionados em A+B1, B2 e C, e as proteínas em A, B1+B2, B3 e C. Os parâmetros de cinética de degradação ruminal das rações foram estimados a partir do método semiautomático de produção cumulativa de gases in vitro. Foram utilizados quatro animais ½ Gir x ½ Holandês, machos e castrados, fistulados no rúmen, mantidos em pastagem e recebendo 1kg de ração concentrada, como doadores de inócuo ruminal. O ensaio foi realizado em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro rações e quatro períodos, e os resultados obtidos foram interpretados de acordo com a análise de variância e de regressão a 5% de significância. Houve efeito linear decrescente para o fracionamento de carboidratos totais e a fração A+B1, e efeito linear crescente sobre as frações B2 e C. Para as frações nitrogenadas, houve efeito linear crescente sobre a fração A, e efeito linear decrescente sobre as frações B1+B2 e C. Em relação à cinética de degradação ruminal in vitro, houve efeito decrescente sobre o parâmetro "a", e efeito quadrático sobre os parâmetros "b" e "c", com pontos de máxima, respectivamente, de 61,84 e 66,77% de torta de girassol. A inclusão da torta de girassol nas rações suplementares, nos teores estudados, influenciou nas frações dos carboidratos, das proteínas e nos parâmetros de degradação ruminal. Caso haja a disponibilidade desse ingrediente, ele pode ser adicionado à ração suplementar de bovinos sem prejuízo nos parâmetros nutricionais e metabólicos. Palavras
