Choosing a course textbook is an overwhelming task for both teachers and administrators. The aim of this study was to evaluate Iranian junior high school textbook series base on validated criteria. For this purpose a careful analyzing textbook evaluation checklists suggested by Sheldon (1984Sheldon ( ) skierso (1991 and Tucker (1992) was picked out. Among proposed criteria, eighteen critical features were selected to analyze Iranian junior high school series written by Birjandi in (1991). The Criteria were applied to the series analytically by researcher to examine the materials. The criteria in a form of questionnaire given to 15 experienced teachers who were teaching mentioned series for more than ten years. The gathered data revealed that it lacks appropriate layout and physical characteristics, materials have not be recycled, not all skills have been considered equally, emphasis is on grammatical points which practiced through speaking and listening. Moreover; recordings are artificial, no attention is paid to students needs and topics are out of date and boring .Also audio-visual materials, teachers' guide and communicative tasks seems to be forgotten by writer. Therefore; all eighteen features except vocabulary lists, availability of glossary and lots of grammatical points have not been considered a lot. That is, students' interests have been ignored totally and little communicative issues have been regarded in these series. In fact, at end of this determined time students would be proficient at structural points with no efficiency at communication. These findings can be helpful for curriculum designers, textbook writers to design some valuable textbooks that are useful for teachers to teach language communicatively.
The EAP textbooks which are currently taught in Iranian universities don't seem to satisfy the necessary requirements current in new enquires of EAP research. An EAP book sample from SAMT 1 publications for the students of medicine was chosen for a critical analysis on three criteria including: evaluating the objectives, reviewing the content, and evaluating the overall structure. The exploratory reviews showed that there must be major changes in EAP for medical students of SAMT to meet the specific needs of the target group above. In this article, the general status of ESP material development approaches is also depicted diachronically in order to evaluate the present situation in Iran against appropriate recent approaches towards EAP material development in the world. Recommended implications of some kind are presented throughout the various parts of the present survey.
The present paper aims at classifying different types of ambiguities in the Holy Qur"ān and then evaluating and criticizing the made English translations of the ambiguous verses. To do so, a classification of linguistic ambiguity is offered and the samples of these classifications from the Holy Qur"ān are mentioned. The ambiguous verses are classified as phonological, lexico-semantic and conjugational structural ambiguities. The qualities of translations and English translation strategies of the stated verses are also investigated. There are many linguistic ambiguous verses in the Holy Qur"ān that may cause a trouble for a translator.
Since we live in an increasingly globalized world, we are definitely more well-informed about the world happenings through various mediums of globalization such as internet, news agencies, news channels, etc. Here lies the important and remarkable role of translation as a medium of conveying messages and transferring information. If a news piece is translated problematically, it may have bad effects on people’s thinking about a certain country or it may lead to misunderstanding and misjudgment. Therefore, to produce translations as properly as possible, especially in cultural and cross-cultural aspects of translation which are abundant in news texts, the translators need to apply effective translation strategies. Domestication and foreignization translation strategies are two important strategies of translation in rendering phrasal verbs in news from a source-text language to a culture-specific target-text one. The authors of this study have applied these strategies of translation to English-Persian phrasal verbs in news texts to investigate whether English-Persian translators tend to domesticate the news headlines or foreignize them. The news containing phrasal verbs was analyzed based on the ones from different news agencies and websites. First, some news containing phrasal verbs is analyzed, then the English translations were compared and contrasted. As the results of the study showed, English to Persian translators tend to apply the domestication strategy more frequently. It was concluded that since culture-specific terms and words are difficult to be understood in the target language, the translators mostly tend to localize or domesticate them. This research is helpful in journalistic translation studies, since it focuses on the important features of phrasal verbs as culture-specific and context-bound terms with respect to translation strategies
Abstract-The dichotomy between the writer and the translator is de-stabilized with the announcement of death of the author. This paper applies Gadamer's and Barthes's theories to literary translation in an attempt to reappraise the role of the translator. It is believed that the translator is involved in a triad act of transcodification. As the reader of the source text, he is an interlingual transcodifier, and as the writer of the target text, he acts intercontextually and intraliguistically. The given triad task pinpoints the limitations of some of Barthes's notions, specifically the inefficiency of his distinction between 'readerly' and 'writerly' texts. Viewed as such, the freedom of the reader/translator in the playfield of signifiance is challenged by the translator's interlingual and intercontextual transcodification. In a Barthesian key note, the act of translation is performance-based. Hence, the translator is involved in a doing-translation process. Utilizing Barthes's view on the processual nature of reading/writing, the present paper suggests a constant reassessment of the alreadytranslated texts which is necessary for keeping pace with globalization.
