ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY AND GENDER-BASED SEGREGATION AT WORK ABSTRACTThe disciplines of natural sciences and engineering in Turkey have been shaped by the equal participation of women since the establishment of a higher education system. However, as a professional culture shapedby masculine values the field of engineering requires a more nuanced analysis of gender and its patterns of segregation.Based on the quantitative data of our research conducted with male and female engineers and technicians employed in major R&D centers and a university technopark of Turkey, this study aims to analyze genderbased segregation in the fields of science, technology and engineering on occupational and workplace levels and hence to explore patterns of horizontal, vertical and integral segregation out of which gender discrimination practices are formed. A thorough analysis of gender segregation and discrimination in a field with a highly qualified labor force in line with the characteristics of the gender regime in Turkey enables us to better understand mechanisms of discrimination and devise strategies to struggle with the gender inequalities at the labor market in the fields of science, technology and engineering.
