Dans cet article j’essaie de relier la pensée féministe dans l’Empire Ottoman, les Balkans et ultérieurement en Turquie à la formation des subjectivités bourgeoises, depuis le dernier quart du xixe siècle jusqu’à l’entre-deux-guerres. J’examine dans quelle mesure le féminisme, en tant que critique envers l’ordre social existant, fut fondé sur la subjectivité bourgeoise émanant des Lumières et du Romantisme, outils communs de pensée de diverses populations lettrées en « Orient ». Je mets en parallèle, à cet égard, les histoires de vie de certaines intellectuelles, défenseuses des droits des femmes : Sotiria Cléoménous-Aliberti (1847-1929) et Kalliopi Kechagia (1839-1905), intellectuelles grecques actives dans l’Empire Ottoman et la Grèce, et Fatma Aliye (1862-1936), Halide Edib Adıvar (1884-1964) et Nezihe Muhittin (1889-1958), intellectuelles turques-musulmanes éminentes de l’époque. Je suis, à ce propos, les textes produits par ces femmes : leur correspondance ainsi que leur production intellectuelle – autobiographies, essais, articles, romans ou nouvelles. Leur écriture est considérée comme « narration de soi », par où elles cherchaient à gagner l’hégémonie sociale (en termes gramsciens) sur l’ensemble de la féminité nationale, voire sur l’ensemble du corps national
