Land degradation in the form of soil erosion and nutrient depletion threatens food security and the sustainability of agricultural production in Sub-Saharan Africa [1]. For instance, soil erosion is the main environmental and economic problem in the highland of Ethiopia [2][3][4]. Soil erosion induced by water had an impact on national food supply [5], deteriorate soil fertility and reduce agricultural productivity [6,7], downstream flooding and reservoir sedimentation [8,9] and loss of valuable plant nutrients [10]. In order to solve soil degradation problems, in Ethiopia efforts towards soil and water conservation (SWC) goals were started in the mid-1970s and 80s to alleviate soil erosion and low crop productivity [11,12].
