The paper reveals the genre-forming features of the “analytical article” genre. This type of text is characterized differently in foreign and domestic linguistics, however, despite national and cultural specificity, it reveals common features. By its nature, the “analytical article” is an objective genre aimed at informing readers, but under the influence of political discourse there is an increase in the subjective component, and, as a result, in the impacting function. This double nature of the genre is represented in linguistic means used by the author.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the state of the modern newspaper style. The author notes that the theory of newspaper style was developed in the 60s of the last century and since then has undergone a number of changes that have not received sufficient coverage in linguistics. Attention is paid to the changes in the modern newspaper style, among which one can single out the strengthening of emotionality and dialogue. It is emphasized that these features are generally characteristic of media texts and, correspondingly, newspaper-style texts included in the media space. According to the presented research results, these tendencies are realized in newspaper-style texts through the use of colloquial vocabulary, repetition, quotation and question in the narrative (or rhetorical question), word play. It is shown that, at the same time, the majority of news reports (81 %), which constitute the core of the newspaper style and most clearly reflect its features, retain the key style characteristics: the prevalence of the message function, conciseness, brevity, the desire for emotionless and non-judgmental presentation. It seems that the statements about the “blurring” and disappearance of the newspaper style are premature and are caused by its evolution and dynamics.
The article analyzes the functions realized in an analytical article devoted to political issues. The analytical article tends to present objective information, contains the analysis of the situation or problem and gives unbiased conclusions, that is prompt by informative function. Political discourse which is highly manipulative by its nature has а significant impact on the analytical article and promotes the function. The functions of the analytical article are carried out through the implementation of subjective and objective modality. Objective modality is most commonly expressed through factual information, parenthesis, and terms. These means allow one to make the statement more reliable and clear. Subjective modality, on the other hand, is usually expressed through metaphors, emotionally-expressive lexis and
The ways of explication of evidentiality in analytical articles of the English-language press are investigated. 30 articles of newspapers “The Washington Post”, “The Guardian”, “The Independent” for 2021 are analyzed. The classification of evidential values is presented on the basis of two indicators: the source of information and its degree of reliability. Three types of evidentiality have been identified: direct evidentiality (there is a clear indication of the source of information); impersonal evidentiality (lack of an identified source of information); author’s evidentiality (based on the author’s conclusions). The results of the study showed a significant superiority of direct evidentiality (74 %), realized through the precise indication of the source of information and the use of the author’s “we”. It was revealed that impersonal evidentiality is not typical for an analytical article (6 %). This is due to its specific characteristics: the desire for objectivity and transparency of the data provided. It is noted that this type of evidentiality is realized through adverbs, indicating an anonymous source and using collective nouns. It is shown that the author’s evidentiality is found in 20 % of cases and is realized through filler words, main sentences like that means, adverbs, impersonal sentences using verbs of perception, constructions “to be + adjective with a probability value”, modal verbs.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
