Directional measurements of wind-wave spectra made during the year of 1996 are used in a preliminary investigation of the wind-wave climate and its transformation at the São Francisco do Sul island, northern coast of the Santa Catarina state. Four major sea states and associated meteorological conditions are identified through analyses of joint distributions of observed wave parameters. Transformations of these main sea-state patterns due to refraction and shoaling are investigated through a numerical modeling approach that allows the reconstruction of the wave field within extensive coastal areas, using single point measurements of the wave spectrum in shallow waters. Cross-validation of measured and reconstructed spectra at the study site yield consistent results, suggesting that the proposed methodology works well for the São Francisco do Sul coast.
Small scale experiments and numerical simulations have been performed to evaluate a new concept of converter to produce electricity from wave energy. The models, tested in scale 1:10, have been submitted to different regular waves, with height and period representatives of the Brazilian coast, to evaluate the power generation and efficiency. The tests were carried out in a wave basin able to simulate in scale the wave conditions. Software especially written for the simulation of the converter behavior under regular waves has been initially correlated with the experimental results and, later on, it will be employed in parametric studies to estimate the best parameters of the system, in particular the prescribed pressure to be set for the best performance in terms of electricity production.

Medições do espectro direcional de ondas geradas pelo vento realizadas em 1996 são utilizadas em uma investigação preliminar do clima de ondas no litoral norte de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Quatro estados de mar predominantes são identificados, em conjunto com os padrões meteorológicos associados a sua ocorrência, através de análises estatísticas. As transformações desses quatro estados de mar devido a refraçâo e empinamento são investigadas através de modelos numéricos, que permitem obter estimativas do campo de ondas em áreas extensas a partir de medições pontuais feitas em águas rasas. Comparações entre espectros medidos e modelados produzem resultados consistentes, sugerindo que a metodologia proposta é válida para a costa de São Francisco do Sul
RESUMOO trabalho apresenta uma descrição sucinta do sistema utilizado e das informações geradas no Programa de Informação Costeira da UFSC. Apresenta-se também, pela primeira vez, as séries temporais dos parâmetros básicos do campo de onda registrados no ano de 2003. A titulo de informação para futuros programas, é apresentado também um relato dos episódios de desgarre da bóia medidora de ondas.
