To describe diagnosis, CT findings, management and short-term outcome of a large population of canine pyothorax cases.MethOds: Retrospective analysis of 101 canine pyothorax cases at two UK referral centres. Medical records and CT images were reviewed. Dogs were included if pre-and post-contrast CT was performed within 48 hours of presentation.Results: CT abnormalities included pleural thickening (84.1%), pannus (67.3%), pneumothorax (61.4%), mediastinal effusion (28.7%), pulmonary (13.8%) and mediastinal (7.9%) abscessation, foreign body presence (7.9%), foreign body tracts (6.9%) and pneumonia (6.9%). Seventy-one percent of dogs were managed surgically, of which 90.2% survived, and 29% were managed medically, of which 72.4% survived. Overall mortality was 14.8% and 86.6% of these dogs died within 48 hours of admission. All dogs with evidence of a foreign body on CT underwent surgery. clinical significance: Mortality in our population was low and most dogs that died did so within 48 hours of hospitalisation, regardless of management type.
The objective of the study was to describe the MRI features of cytologically or histologically diagnosed solitary vertebral masses in dogs and identify potential MRI features enabling differentiation between malignant and benign lesions. Patients were divided into malignant and benign groups according to the final diagnosis. Medical records and MRI studies were retrospectively reviewed, and specific imaging features were compared. The malignant group comprised 15 dogs, with 5 dogs included in the benign group. MRI features of the different histopathologic/cytologic types of masses are described. Involvement of the vertebral body, a hyperintense signal on T2-weighted, short tau inversion recovery, T1-weighted, and T1-weighted gradient echo sequences and evidence of cortical destruction were significantly associated with malignancy (P < .05). Hypointensity on T1-weighted gradient echo sequence was significantly associated with benign masses (P < .05). The presence of bone sclerosis was significantly associated with osteosarcomas compared with other malignant masses (P < .05). Fractures (5 cases) were only seen in the group of malignant masses. This pilot study identifies some MRI features that may help differentiate between malignant and benign solitary vertebral masses. Greater case numbers are needed in future studies.
The aim of the study was to describe the clinical and imaging findings of three dogs diagnosed with orbital ligament avulsion. Three immature dogs presented following a facial bite trauma, including multiple skull fractures and ventral, ventrolateral or rostrolateral displacement of the affected eye. The extent of lesions and orbital ligament avulsion were assessed and diagnosed using CT (n=2) or MRI (n=1). Orbital ligament avulsion was identified as an interruption of the linear structure between the zygomatic process of the frontal bone and the frontal process of the zygomatic bone. One dog was treated surgically to correct a visual axis alteration, while the remaining two dogs were managed conservatively. Orbital ligament avulsion is an uncommon condition that should be considered following a facial trauma. Concurrent lesions might necessitate surgical intervention, but it remains unclear if the avulsion of the orbital ligament itself requires a specific treatment.
