Refugees have a disadvantaged position in the national and local labour markets. In addition to lack of human capital, lack of identity documents, inadequate language skills, ethnic and racial discrimination, the cultural practices in the labour market place refugees at the lowest level in the labour hierarchy. On the other hand, through employment, the immigrant individual develops new social networks, fosters hope for language learning and seizes opportunities to regain his/her economic independence. Facilitating the structural integration of immigrant groups through employment can help prevent possible social refractions and conflicts. For this reason, the receiving countries should adjust their labour markets for these immigrant groups. This study aims to determine the employment areas and conditions of Syrian women, to specify the problems they face proceeding from their experiences in the labour market, and to examine whether employment is a determining factor in terms of their structural integration. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 22 Syrian women in the Sultanbeyli district of Istanbul. The resulting data is interpreted under themes following their separation into coding units. As a result of this study, it is determined that the labour of the refugee women has been at the lowest level in the labour hierarchy and thus the form of division of labour has changed accordingly. On the other hand, women in the labour market develop their language skills, expand their social networks, increase their role scales and gain economic independence. In this context, structural integration through employment has been found to be more meaningful for refugee women.
