ObjectivesWe developed a conceptual model to define key concepts associated with patients’ experiences with the signs, symptoms, and impacts of non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (M0-CRPC).MethodsA targeted review of peer-reviewed literature, and other publicly available information, identified and categorized symptoms and impacts related to early-stage prostate cancer. Semi-structured interviews with five clinical experts helped determine the most relevant and important concepts for patients with M0-CRPC. Qualitative interviews with 17 patients with M0-CRPC identified the most frequently experienced symptoms and impacts, and their degree of interference with patients’ lives. The findings from these three lines of evidence were summarized in a conceptual model.ResultsLiterature searches identified mainly urinary, intestinal, and sexual symptoms. Experts noted the symptoms most frequently mentioned by patients include erectile dysfunction, loss of sexual desire or interest, incontinence/leaking, urgency, and hot flashes. Patient interviews confirmed the high frequency of erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, urinary urgency, and incontinence. The most frequently mentioned impacts expressed by patients were the need to monitor/plan for urinary frequency, interference with/restriction of daily activities, and frustration or anxiety over diagnosis, symptoms, or treatment. Symptoms and impacts most frequently experienced by patients were typically not those with the greatest effects on their lives; rather, those with the greatest consequences were related to treatment.ConclusionsThe leading concerns associated with M0-CRPC were related to voiding and sexual dysfunction. IntroductionAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) imposes significant burden on patients, their families, and the healthcare system. Published literature has reported many AML signs and symptoms, as well as their impact on patients. However, there are no publications on the experience of living with AML from the patient's perspective. In this study, we performed qualitative interviews with patients with AML to understand their experience.MethodsParticipants were recruited from the US and Japan. All patients were screened to assess eligibility, and were divided into four subgroups (i.e., newly-diagnosed, high-intensity chemotherapy; newly-diagnosed, low-intensity chemotherapy; relapse/refractory; and post-transplant). Patients were interviewed over the phone by a trained researcher and asked about their day-to-day experience with AML. Signs/symptoms and impacts were coded, analyzed using Atlas.ti software, and reported as frequencies, with the medians of patient-reported disturbance levels (0–10) computed for each symptom and impact.ResultsThe most commonly reported sign/symptom in the US was fatigue (95.7%), followed by bruising and weakness (both 78.3%), and in Japan, nausea (94.4%), followed by fatigue and headache (both 88.9%). The most commonly reported impact in the US was a decreased ability to maintain social/familial roles (91.3%), followed by anxiety and a decreased ability to function (both 87.0%), and most commonly reported in Japan was anxiety, a decreased ability to function, and remission uncertainty (94.4%).ConclusionAlthough the frequency of signs/symptoms and their level of disturbance varied between the US and Japan, there was remarkable consistency in the types of signs/symptoms and impacts reported across all patients. This study evaluated the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF) in patients with moderate-to-severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Patients ≥18 years old who self-reported a physician diagnosis of SLE (confirmed by medical record review) and active SLE (Systemic Lupus Activity Questionnaire (SLAQ) score of ≥11) were included. The BPI-SF and Short Form Health Survey version 2 (SF-36v2) were administered electronically at baseline, week 2 and week 12. Psychometric properties of the BPI-SF were evaluated. Cronbach alphas were >0.9 for all BPI-SF items, domains and total score. Test-retest reliability correlations for responses between baseline and week 2 of the BPI-SF had intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ≥0.5. The BPI-SF domains and total score were moderately positively correlated to the SLAQ score (r ≥ 0.4), but negatively correlated to the SF-36v2 bodily pain domain (r ≤ -0.6). The BPI-SF domains and total score were moderately negatively correlated to the SF-36v2 physical functioning domain and physical component summary (r ≤ -0.4), with low correlations between the BPI-SF severity domain and SF-36v2 mental component summary (r = -0.16). Assessment of pain, as measured by the BPI-SF, demonstrated validity and reliability in a sample of patients with moderate-to-severe SLE.
