This study aims to examine the determinants of workers’ remittances and their impact on economic growth in Yemen. Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds test to co-integration and error correction model (ECM) were applied on data covering the period from 1990 to 2014. According to the model of remittances determinants, workers’ remittances in Yemen respond to the macroeconomic conditions of both the home and host countries. It is found that, in the long run, migrant stock and income level at the host countries are positively and strongly influence remittances level, with a feeble impact of domestic inflation rates. The effect of home country’s income seems to be positive but insignificant in explaining the behavior of remittances level. The model of economic growth suggests that, in the long run, the impact of workers’ remittances appears to be positive and moderate with positive and stronger influences observed for financial development and official development assistance. Accordingly, it is recommended that a lesser weight should be given to remittances in the strategic planning process, taking into consideration the increasing potentials of the conditions in the neighboring host countries to be changed. In addition, using remittances as a means of economic growth can be enhanced via encouraging migrants to direct their savings towards productive investment activities, and via formal channels.
This study investigates the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in Yemen and the causal relationships between Carbon dioxide emissions, per capita income, energy consumption, trade openness, and industrial share to GDP. ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration, Error Correction Model, and Toda-Yamamoto procedure to Granger causality techniques were employed on annual data covering the period from 1990 to 2010. long run relationship between CO2 emissions and its determinants with significant effects for per capita GDP and trade openness, whereas, energy consumption and trade openness appear to be important determinants of CO2 emissions in the short run. Besides, based on Narayan and Narayan (2010) approach, it is found that the EKC hypothesis does not hold in Yemen and therefore the effect of per capita income on CO2 emissions is monotonically increasing. Toda-Yamamoto causality test proved the existence of bidirectional causal relationships between economic growth and CO2 emissions, between energy consumption and economic growth, and between trade openness and energy consumption
This paper investigates the determinants and stability of narrow and broad real money demand functions in Yemen. The ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration and error correction modeling were applied to quarterly data covering the period from 2001Q1 to 2013Q4. The empirical results suggest the existence of long-run relationships between real money balances (M1 and M2), and their determinants including real income, inflation rate, and exchange rate. The elasticity coefficients of the real income and inflation rate bear the predicted positive and negative signs respectively and found to be statistically significant. The dominance of the currency substitution effect is reflected in the negative sign of the elasticity coefficient of exchange rate. In addition, CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests support the stability of both M1 and M2 models during the estimation period.
